Job interview tomorrow - how bad is this morally?

I am currently on 'sick' leave from a nursing course while they do some assessments into my fitness to practice (for mental health reasons).

They have given me no indication of if or when I will be allowed back onto the course.

I feel fine and uni have said that they are happy for me to work and will give me a positive reference accordingly - including care work.

I have an interview tomorrow for a job as a care assistant, I have two good references and lots of experience. I am fine mentally and much of the uni stuff is people being dramatic. I have not told them that I may return to the nursing course, I have said I have left.

Nobody is going to employ me if I tell them that I might leave and I have no idea when.

I feel bad for fibbing but I need a job and the uni have been so slow, I have held off for nearly 6 months but money is tight.

Fib. Put your needs to employed first. It's only fair. Don't feel guilty. tis nothing worng with trying to provide for yourself. Nothing at all.

nickytwotimes · 14/01/2009 13:29

Yep, in this instance it is okay to fib.
Care assistant is a high turn over job anyway.

I disagree, smurfgirl. You are legally bound to disclose any 'sickness' to future employers. They are legally bound to look after the welfare of their staff.

You need to declare your current status, but provide contact details for someone official who has said that they are happy for you to work.

It is wrong, morally, and legally, to withold the information.

Having said that, your course is suspended indefinitely, so you don't need to make a big deal about potentially returning.

I suppose what I am saying, is be totally honest about your reason for not being on the course at this time, but don't give more info about your future plans (which may or may not include returning to the course) than you have to

Fib. Employers show very little loyalty nowadays so put yourself first.

just something to think about - if you do go back and get qualified, when you're registered with the NMC you will have to abide by the code of conduct which includes things like honesty and professionalism. If you lie now it might come back to mess things up in the future.

Why not go on the bank/agency route? You will probably be able to get as many hours as you want, and possibly returning to the course won't be an issue.

ilovelovemydog · 14/01/2009 13:55

Be honest. I don't see the problem in telling them the truth; that you were having problems or whatever on the nursing course and are now trying to get a job as a care assistant.

If they ask about your future plans, say you need to work, which is true.

smurfgirl · 14/01/2009 14:53

I have said I left after having problems on my final placement.

Its a job in a private home and they don't have their own occupational health or anything.

If I go back into the NHS I will disclose things. Sick is a bit of a funny one because basically they wanted to assess me to see if I was ok to go back on as a student nurse but they are delaying and delaying - so I am not really off on sick, am just waiting and waiting.

Reference from uni have said they will not mention this time off as sick time off due to the unusual circumstances.

There is NO bank work at the moment, I am on the bank and getting no shifts, I cannot make enough to live off on the bank.

To update. I said that the course was open for me to return but I didn't have to return until 2010 (true) soooooo I did fib a little bit but not too much.

Waiting to hear now. Don't think I have got it tbh.
