PRs/ copywriters: what do you charge?

I'm a freelance journalist but I've been invited for a chat with a creative agency about doing some copywriting for them.

I'm not really sure what my fees should be.

I'm not based in London; in a small, northern city.

Bumping for you.

Laugs I am a freelance PR and usually charge £50 per hour, however with work being quite scarce at the moment I have cut my rates to £35 per hour which seems to be more acceptable.

Thanks Katie. Are you in London or elsewhere?

Laugs I normally charge £300 a day for general writing (based in Southwest).

Would probably charge slightly more for very specialised copywriting (the shorter the copy, the more I would charge on a time-based rate, IYSWIM).

But bearing in mind the economic climate at the moment you should be flexible, as Katie says.

I used to charge £320 for a day when I was freelance about 2/3 yrs ago. I based it on £40/hour. Wouldn't charge that now, the market where I am (Midlands) wouldn't take it. But I always lowered it for long contracts/big projects (I did a 6 month stint for £185/day once - but it was regular work).

PRs generally charge less than copywriters - £250 max. Again that's for round here, and if you're workig for an agency. You could probably charge more if you had direct clients, as if it was PR you'd be competing against agencies charging anything from £450-£1000 per day.

I charge £30-35 an hour.

Laugs - I charge £150 per press release (approx 400 words) and £250 for up to 1000 words. I charge the same rates for copywriting. I'm based in the Northwest and do most of my work for a company based in South Wales. HTH
