I am 25 weeks pregnant. I have given in my MatB1 form and said verbally when I intend to take maternity leave from. Am I supposed to put this in writing? Do I need to give a specific date- at the moment I have just said beginning of April as my line manager was trying to find out if it would be possible for me to stack my AL at the beginning of Maternity leave.

You don't technically have to put it in writing, but your employer can ask for you to, and it's a good idea, even if your employer doesn't ask for it.

Have a read here about taking your maternity leave.

You could put that you want to start from x date as long as you can take your annual leave before you go.
