WHAT COULD I DO?

Hi! I began maternity leave in october to have my first baby. I'm now getting close to my date to go back and I can't think of anything WORSE! I've been in retail eversince I left school (18 yrs)
Now I would love to do something to earn abit of extra cash that doesn't involve leaving my daughter, eg.. work from home or driving around so I could have her with me. But what the hell do you do when you've no experience of anything but retail? I was in a managerial position,too.

Childminding?

The lady that does my ironing (dh's shirts mainly), runs an ironing service. She has been doing it since her little boy was about 3 months.

Yeah, that's the sorta thing- dead easy, don't need qualifications,only...I HATE BLOODY IRONING!!!

I know, so do I!

I used to be in retail and got out many years ago hard work and low pay and not child friendly.

I knew of a girl who delivered parcels for next, not sure about the child care arrangement I think she used to do evenings when hubby was at home.

There appears to be little opportunity to work from home unless already employed by a company, although a friend of mine knew of a woman that worked from home selling holidays like for a holiday bank, not sure how this works or how you here of jobs like this. larsxx

Do you type? You could advertise to to secretarial work from home in local shops.

La Redoute and Vertbaudet do courier delivery as well (woman in a car) as do Grollier (sp) who sell books. One of these woman calls up and down out street on a regular basis so I guess she works for one courier company who gets business off all these companies. If I find the courier companies name out I'll get back to you.

There was a thread recently about doing stuff for the body shop.

Oh I know, a friend of mine sells cards from home, think the company is called Phoenix

She has parties at home, visits playgroups etc I think. Makes quite good money for p/t work

Also as you have been in retail it should be a doddle!

I think you have to fork out a bit to get started £100 or something for the pack.

Only thing is MollyMooMin, you could maybe drive around with your dd when she is small and won't mind it, but as she gets bigger would she fancy being in the car a lot? I know my 2 would have gone nuts!

What about childminding? Then you would always be there for your dd and earn some pennies too.

I'm in a similar situation, myself. Been in IT for ten years and now SAHD and loving it. We could do with a few extra pennies but I'm really reluctant to put dd (10 months) in nursery or childcare. I've applied to a few of the DIY superstores and supermarkets to work a few hours on their night crews. Not sure how it will work out but seems the best solution to me, though. Our Next delivery girl lives round the corner and is very good.

MollyMooMin, hiya just wondering if you have ever considered a self employed sales job I am doing this at the mo and have been for a year or two it's great as I work at night whilst the girls are in bed I only work 3 hours and get a resonable income at the end it's in wedding photography for a very very very well know international company so it's not a dodgy direct sales company if u want more info u can email me at [email protected]

MollyMooMin I'm doing several things from home. 3 lots of netowrok marketing including Phoenix cards already mentioned. If you were doing something managerial you may be more interested in mini-IQ- they're a new company so there's a good opportunity there to run a team.

I've also just started working for AQA- any questions answered. They answer questions people text in from theiir mobile phones. Involves sitting at home on the internet plugging into google. Can sign on and off as you please. And they pay holoday pay!

Thanks for all your ideas! I'm looking into starting with The Body Shop At Home, but still early days yet.I already feel like I've lost alot of confidence, so we'll have to wait and see!
