I have an interview when I am supposed to be at work!

Only found out about the interview this afternoon and already worried just in case I can't get the time off. Does my employer have to give me the time off? Or can they refuse?

I am not leaving my present job because of bad terms, its just that its my ideal job that has come up.

They are aware I have applied for this job, so I am not hiding anything as I have already asked them to give me a reference.

Thanks

I think they can refuse, but I don't know for sure. If they already know you are looking, then maybe they won't refuse.

No they don't have to give you time off, but if they already know you've applied and are happy to give you a reference, they will be expecting you to have an interview at some point, so it would be very churlish for them not to let you take a half day holiday or whatever you need.

I spoke to my line manager this morning. She is aware that this is the only job I have applied for. She has given me time off.(phew) She has let me take an hr off before the interview and however long the interview lasts for. I will be a bit short on time, interview is about 30mins car journey away. So I will only have 20mins or so to get ready. At least I won't have time to fret!
