I thought appraisals were about seeing if there were problems, helping fix them, room for growth etc....

DH was told that nothing about his job will change, he is clearly miserable, so he was best trying to find another job

Ok he IS miserable and trying to find something else, but you would think they would at least pretend to be working on improving the atmosphere etc!!!!!

Well yes, not the ideal appraisal at all.

But.

If there is nothing his manager can do about the aspects of your DHs job that he would like changed, is it not better that she/he is honest about that rather than stringing him along pretending to be doing something while actually not?

Just a thought, and obviously I don't know what the problems are or whether they could in fact be addressed.

I kind of agree. I had a member of staff who was clearly unhappy in her job, but that was the job and there was nothing I could do about it. She wanted more responsibility and to take on extra tasks but unfortunately at that time there was no room for movement.

I made it clear that the job was what it was but I was happy for her to have time off for interviews etc if she wanted to move on.

I think its different if he's miserable about aspects of the job that can be changed though and they're doing nothing about it!

Yup, it is better that they are honest about it.

DH has been miserable for a while. The only thing that would make it better is more money, which they can't/won't do. They didn't bother giving him any "targets", which he is pleased about

Well, that and sacking the workshop manager, but again, not gonna happen even if he is a w&nker
