I want to sell my business, anyone got any advice on how I should go about doing this?

I've made up my mind, I really can't carry on running this business myself, but I don't want all my work to just go down the pan, and it has the potential to do really well with the right owner behind it.

It's a catering business, but can be done from home around childcare with a big enough kitchen. Would have to still be in this area as it is local.

I was thinking of letting all my customers know, they may be interested, or have friends who are, but what other ways should I advertise?

Mumsnet local?
Flyers on public noticeboards?
Newspapers?
Online?

My brain isn't really working, any help would be greatly appreciated.

what about the website www.mumandworking.co.uk I seem to remember they had a section for businesses for sale.

How will you value the business? A friend of mine has just sold a business, and used a specialist company who valued the business and then helped sell it- kind of like an estate agent for a business, iyswim.

Would you consider taking on a business partner?

thank you betty, I will look at that website.

TBH I just want a quick sale, so will sell it at the minimum it is valued at.

If it's a local business, then probably worth putting an ad in the local paper? I often see people selling businesses that way.

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 14:37

Yes I was thinking of trying the local paper.

Whereabouts is it? I've been thinking of setting up on my own (no-one else wants to employ me,it seems ) and I can cook!

Cambridgeshire.

Where are you?

Overmydeadbody, I'd recommend www.businessesforsale.com/

A huge website. I used it when I was thinking about buying a business.

Sorry you've had to come to that decision. Must have been hard.

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 15:37

Thank you Dubh, just looked at that site and it costs £99 to advertise for two months!

I don't have that kind of money

I might just contact my local NCT, maybe they'll help me out (as I have written a couple of articles for their magazines over the years)

Do you have an AdTrader?

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 15:53

Would that work?

I'm popping to the shops in a bit, I will find an AdTrader, I've never looked in one before but it might be a fab idea! Thanks expat.

have a look at one in the newsagents.

people sell everything in there - livestock, businesses, etc.
