Does anyone know what would happen tax-wise if I took on a job at the weekends?

I work three days per week and we are stoney broke so I am thinking of doing some care work at the weekends (totally different from what I do for my first job but I have experience and wouldn't mind doing it again).

Does anyone know if I would be charged a higher tax (I think I would) and what it would be??

I am so not on the ball with this sort of thing but I am sure someone here might know!

You get a tax free allowance (about £6000 this year - I think)

Everything you earn over this allowance is taxed at 20%

So for every £6 you earn you pay £1.50 in tax

you would pay 20% tax on all your earnings(that's the basic rate atm, assuming your first income is not that high(ie not up in the £40k range) If your joint income from both employments is below the tax free allowance they'll work it out at the end of the year and refund what you owe.

Allowances, you get a tax free allowance each year, about £5,500 atm(I can't remember exactly now, it's too late)

If you go over the weekly/monthly NI limit you will pay NI too.

For every £10 you earn you pay £2 in tax.
So, for every £6 you earn you would pay £1.20 in tax.

ok, so my first income is about £21k and as long as my second one didn't take it jointly to over £40k (which it wouldn't), I would get the first £6k free and the rest at 20%? But until the end of the year I would just be charged 20% on all of it (including the £6k) until they worked out the refund?

No, you are already (or should be) getting the first £6k off your £21k job. They will not take that away from you; there is no need as it is correct.

When you start your second job, they will take 20% of everything you earn in that second job. This is correct as your free pay allowance (the £6k) is already used up with your first job.

You already pay NI for your first job but, provided you do not earn more than £453 per month (or £104 per week) you will not pay any NI on your second job.
