Help re single mum student taking summer break, issues with ex looking after kids

I've just been told by the dwp that I am not entitled to income support over the summer because I received the social work bursary at the begginning of this term (sep 2008). Apparently they don't take into account loans but the do the grant meaning they calculate my income as £87 a week. In september I was told that I would be entitled to income support over the summer so I have used the grant money.
I am now going to have to live off of £70 a week over the summer.

I am considering working (if anyone will employ me for 2 months!) and my ex has offered to have the kids 4 days a week (plus he wants to keep his ever other weekend contact)

I am concerned that if he looks after the children this much then he might as well receive benefits for them (panic attitude) which would leave me in an awful position. They do live with me.

Help!

The £70 a week by the way is child tax credit minus £20 towards the rent

2babes- Have you spoken with anyone at Uni?

Every uni has an Access to Learning Fund (Hardship Fund) where they are able to give students up to £3500 per academic year (dependant on funds being still available).

It is means tested but I would imagine that you would be a good candidate.
