Is my Boss being unreasonable?

She rang me at 10 am to tell me that my NVQ trainer was there, and wanted to see me.

I have a 45 minute walk each way, and have to be back here at 3 to hand my son over to dp so I can go to work.

It wasn't pre-arranged. I would have had to take my 21 mo son with me, and he doesn't sit still.

I told her I couldn't do it, and she said I didn't have much choice.

I then spoke to the NVQ person and she said i could arrange another date.

I am not happy in this job anyway, but really don't have another option. I know when I start work this afternoon I will get the cold shoulder for not going in this morning.

Can she do this? We don't usually come in on our time off, and we have a rota which says this week I am expected to be there at 3:30pm.

She is usually quite understaning about needing childcare arrangments, so am I in the wrong?

Secur, I don't dare bring this up with her, our finacial position is so precarious at the moment that i am petrified of losing my job. I just really don't want to be treated badly this afternoon. \\\it's making me miserable just thinking about it.

I wouldn't confront her with it at all, just go in and breezily ask when its been rearranged for, or if its already been rearranged, comment on it, but act like its no big deal you didn't come in
She sounds batty

Maybe she is just in a bad mood but even so she is in the wrong. Make a note of this, the date, the time she called you, etc., in case you ever had to defend yourself in a tribunal. Best to always keep records as you never know.

I'd be irritated. You don't need to explain yourself or the importance of your children. I would heed the advice to just go on acting like it's no big deal. But, definitely take a not of it just in case you need it.

Hey, and don't answer the phone on your day off then you can just say 'oh I didn't get the message' - she's no right to be able to contact you!

The sad thing is, she expected me to bring ds with me!!! FFS, he doesn't work there, he has no reason to be there, and I refuse to waste his time, IYKWIM.

I did my housework instead, out of principle . She was fine when I actually got to work, BTW.

I'd have thought on health and safety grounds alone that would be unreasonable colditzmum. It's unreasonable without that! She's childless, right?

She'a not childless, she has two of her own, but they are 10 and 12, and I don't think she realises quite what a handful toddlers can be! I think she's forgotten.

Also, it is her business, and she doesn't see that she is not going to get the same level of dedication from her staff that she is prepared to put in herself.
