What should a Credit Note look like??????

Please forgive the daft question but I have googled this and come up with nowt.

Can any kind soul tell me if a credit note should read exactly the same as the invoice it is crediting or should it be worded differently and show the total amount as zero.

As you can tell I've never had to do this before - I'm usually such a stickler with my invoicing

It should be same as invoice but in reverse! Ie showing the amount being credited - showing VAT if relevent. In the description you could put "credit for abc, as per invoice 123."

Some companies actually put a minus sign before the figures, others just write credit note in big, obvious letters at the top (or sometimes not so obvious which drives me mad!

Don't think there are "rules" as such, just be as clear as you can.

I will go for the CREDIT NOTE in big red letters at the top of the page option and add the extra detail in the description.
