Interview tomorrow and feeling out of my depth, should I still go?

SantaClawssss · 30/03/2026 21:44

I have an interview tomorrow and I am suddenly feeling out of my depth whilst doing mock questions provided by CGPT!
it’s making me so nervous that I feel like I should just not even bother to attend.
i am trying to get as prepared as I can be but am now completely dreading it,
should I just cancel and or go with it and accept I might fail massively but use it as experience for interviews ? Argh

Coining a phrase here, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

To coin another phrase

Is this something a man would say or do? No? You need to go for it. Have the confidence of a mediocre middle class white man.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 30/03/2026 21:48

Yes, go for it!

The worst case scenario is you don’t get it and then think of it as experience of an interview. Best case scenario you get it.
They aren’t looking to find faults they are trying to find the right person so answer as well as you can and once’s it’s done it’s done.
Good luck ❤️

Changingplace · 30/03/2026 21:48

Go, you have absolutely nothing to lose and if nothing else you gain interview experience.

Its actually quite tough even to get an interview at the minute, if they didn’t think you were a strong candidate they wouldn’t even have offered you an interview - do it, good luck x

Morepositivemum · 30/03/2026 21:52

Come off chat gpt, read over your cv, then get to bed and listen to something relaxing. Best of luck op x

I’m so worried I’m just going to freeze and not be able to answer their questions

Just go and good luck! Remember they wouldn’t be interviewing you if they didn’t think you can do the job.

If you’ve got time get some Bach rescue remedy, good for nerves. And don’t forget to ask for more time to answer questions, think about q’s or say you’re a bit nervous.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/03/2026 21:57

If you haven’t done this already, write down all things like STAR answers in a notepad and bring with you, write any other questions/answers. Don’t spend too much time reading through everything but spend a little time.

Middleware · 30/03/2026 21:57

Theres a good chance the people interviewing you are nervous too! They want it to work and so do you. It’s a conversation. Of course you should go for it. Good luck!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/03/2026 21:58

If you get time and want to post on here tomorrow on your way in then do so.

Boxingshibes · 30/03/2026 22:00

Know your CV inside out. Chatgpt is good for running the job description and your CV through. Get it to come up with some questions and then practice, if you have someone to practice with then great!
If it's online check your tech, make a fake call . Plan your hair, clothes makeup etc. Also get a glass of water to sip during interview. You can take a sip while thinking of an answer if flummoxed.
But they obviously like you so breathe and do your best.
You got this!

Best advice. Think up some questions you want to ask too. Remember this interview is 2-way. You’re also trying to find out if you’d like to work there.

I am on an interview panel. Do not ask questions generated by ChatGBT, I have had the same questions repeatedly. Ask things you genuinely want to know - what is career progression like in their company or do they have team building days. But something you actually want any to know.

when they ask you questions, answer with an example. And if you don’t have one, then say, “I don’t have this exact experience, however, if faced with this situation, I would do x, y and z”.

You can ask them to repeat the question to give you time to consider your response. I also think it's okay to say eg Now, that's a good question and one that is tricky to answer in a way because...
I think people should appear themselves/human rather than trying to appear 100% cool and collected for every question.
Best of luck!

Thanks everyone , I will go and do my best

Go! Other tips I used when I did intensive 1:1 communications training:

  • use the STAR technique to make notes on six examples of you at your best; with six, you will be equipped to answer pretty much any competency-based question that comes up
  • run through a 90-second elevator pitch so you can answer 'Tell us about yourself'; start with what you do now, your strengths and what you bring to an organisation (starting at the beginning and summarising your CV is dull so avoid)
  • take in a notebook so you can jot down things that occur to you but that can't be dealt with immediately
  • it's fine to pause for thinking time and as a way to handle nerves
  • sit up straight and make eye-contact with everyone on the panel - you will look and sound confident, even if you don't feel it
  • include questions for them that show you have thought about the job as well as the company as a whole

My daughter has just got her first job after university and followed this approach. You will be fine 😊

SantaClawssss · 31/03/2026 07:05

Thank you for those tips - I feel sick with nerves

GO!!!!!! I went to an interview a few weeks ago and felt so out of my depth, thought I interviewed shit!!! And I got the job! They gave me some great feedback on my interview which I thought was shocking!
explain to them you are nervous. I did! I got stuck on one question and I just asked them to repeat it again. It’s also experience of tha type of interview so if you don’t get it you know what to expect the next time!! Good luck!!

Fantastic! Pleased for you I hope it’s a good move for you. I’m the same, my job has been awful for a while, the interview today has really made me see there is a way out (even if I don’t get this job!)

No interview is wasted, no matter what the outcome. How did it go, OP?

Thanks for asking, it went ok I think, not terrible but I do feel like I didn’t sell myself enough, I don’t think I will get the job. Have to wait till next week. Glad I went though
