Possibly screwed over by AI

In the interests of time and to avoid errors, I wanted to reply as quickly and smoothly to an interview request by email from a recruiter who wanted to move to the next step. So I let my AI app formulate a quick reply. Only after sending, I noticed AI had added a telltale 'signature' to the bottom.

" Thank you for reaching out. Thursday, November 20th at 1pm works perfectly—I’ll be available and looking forward to our conversation.

You can reach me at (XXX) XXX XXXX.

Best regards,

Would you like a slightly more casual or more formal version as well? You can reach me at 2XX XXX XXXX

"

Am I screwed? AI suggested a followup to tell her to disregard the last email BUT that would just draw more attention to it. I am so embarassed. Aren't recruiters trained to look for details? Is this over?

I don’t know why you would need AI to write what is essentially a two line email. If I received that I would think it was very strange and off-putting.

101Alsatians · 19/11/2025 16:09

But it still spelled 'perfectly' wrong? :/

Might not be noticed. It would in my company though to be honest.

Zkr623 · 19/11/2025 16:10

I didnt NEED it. I chose to because I was being lazy. 🤣

But on the other hand if someone is so nitpicky and shallow that they are looking so deeply into what is essentially nothing more than a really informal and quick confirmation email, then im not sure I'd want the job anyway. Isn't it?

It’s gmail so unsend it immediately!!!

TooTiredMum2 · 19/11/2025 16:11

Didn’t it take more time to instruct AI and copy and paste than it would have taken to just reply?

Snowstorm25 · 19/11/2025 16:11

Honestly? It’s not great. As a hiring manager I’ve been massively put off someone who did exactly this - they left very similar wording about alternative versions in their personal statement. That was part of their actual application rather than an email though. I don’t think there’s any harm using AI to support work / job applications where appropriate and helpful so that’s not necessarily the issue but this would ring alarm bells on two levels for me - first the fact that it’s a very simple bit of communication that shouldn’t have needed help to phrase, and secondly the lack of attention to detail / proof reading. If that’s a screen shot then there’s also a spelling mistake on “perfectly”.

Personally I’d assume it won’t go any further and learn from it, and if they continue with the application that’s a bonus and you can focus on how to blow their socks off with how great YOU are by being yourself and not bringing AI in where it isn’t needed.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/11/2025 16:11

Honestly? If I was recruiting and I received that email I'd be seriously put off. Not just because of your laziness in getting an AI to make such a brief response, but also for your lack of attention to detail and professionalism to not bother reading what the AI suggested.

If you're lucky then the recruiter might also be relying on an AI to process the responses and so it'll go unnoticed.

HansHolbein · 19/11/2025 16:11

Your laziness serves you right, to be honest.

I added that line myself. So part AI, part me. 🤣 And yes, I know I screwed up BUT my question is more of, is this really a dagger stab to my chances?

I have had this happen to me and I’ve not taken candidates forward - if you can’t write an email you’re not suitable. Don’t send a disregard email, it makes it even more obvious.

Take the loss as a learning exercise, and if for some reason they don’t see it, count yourself very very lucky and try to use your brain for the conversation instead of Chat gpt

Wow - you're too lazy to reply about a potential job? If I were hirer/recruiter I'd stop the process. It's not being nitpicky or shallow; it's expecting professionalism especially during the recruitment process.

PracticalPixie · 19/11/2025 16:14

Either they will notice and disregard your application or they have a bad eye for detail (as do you apparently 😅), so maybe you'll get away with it.

I agree you should've just written it yourself but hindsight is 2020

arethereanyleftatall · 19/11/2025 16:14

I would say yes it’s over, but not because of AI, but because you needed to use AI to write one simple sentence.

This is business communication that you sent without proper consideration or proof-reading. To be concerned about your ability to do your job properly isn't nit-picky - it gives a clue that you'd likely be just as slapdash with clients/customers.

Upthenorth · 19/11/2025 16:15

It doesn’t look great OP but not a mistake you would make twice I imagine!

Good luck with the job hunt.

Is this a joke? Laziness is not exactly a trait employers are looking for.

ScaryM0nster · 19/11/2025 16:19

It’ll depend on the receivers view of use of AI.

I’d be underwhelmed, but not rule you out at that point. I would however have a higher standard for your future performance through the process as I’d assume it’s all AI fed.

thankgoditssaturday · 19/11/2025 16:20

Can’t you actually write is that why you used AI? I mean it was so brief that this is more than laziness. Then to spell the one thing incorrectly that was your own thought! It’s all a bit odd!

101Alsatians · 19/11/2025 16:23

Can you give us an idea of the role/field?

Trying to thing of a positive spin....

It is a bit funny though...AI and your own brain and still had mistakes 😅

This! It’s not a lengthy reply is it? What were you thinking?

DoAWheelie · 19/11/2025 16:26

I absolutely would count that against someone during recruitment sorry.

It shows a profound lack of caring about the process and laziness. Interviews are where you are meant to be showing your best self so failures here speak quite loudly.

MMAMPWGHAP · 19/11/2025 16:29

Using ‘reaching out’ would be enough for me, let alone the AI.
