Possibly screwed over by AI

In the interests of time and to avoid errors, I wanted to reply as quickly and smoothly to an interview request by email from a recruiter who wanted to move to the next step. So I let my AI app formulate a quick reply. Only after sending, I noticed AI had added a telltale 'signature' to the bottom.

" Thank you for reaching out. Thursday, November 20th at 1pm works perfectly—I’ll be available and looking forward to our conversation.

You can reach me at (XXX) XXX XXXX.

Best regards,

Would you like a slightly more casual or more formal version as well? You can reach me at 2XX XXX XXXX

"

Am I screwed? AI suggested a followup to tell her to disregard the last email BUT that would just draw more attention to it. I am so embarassed. Aren't recruiters trained to look for details? Is this over?

Is it a recruitment consultant?

if so I’d worry less- they’re after their commission and won’t care about these things, provided you’re a good candidate for them to put in front of the client.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2025 16:50

You can tell it’s AI because of the big long hyphen anyway.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 19/11/2025 16:52

You use AI for efficiency, not to replace a lack of skill/effort. You misused the AI in this case. Learn from it and hope there are no real consequences this time round.

spot on

101Alsatians · 19/11/2025 16:53

Didn't you also notice there's also two completely different styles in those two sentences?

'Blabla works perfectly' sounds friendly, enthusiastic and then a formal 'I'll be available, look forward to it'.

Even without the footer, I'd have been suspicious 🤣

🤣 I always remove them as it’s a dead giveaway!

Kipperandarthur · 19/11/2025 16:56

It would be a no from me.

It just shows a complete lack of attention to detail.

ldnmusic87 · 19/11/2025 16:57

I wouldn't hire someone who used AI to respond to a basic email. My company also is wary of AI's usage of private systems.

surprisebaby12 · 19/11/2025 16:58

Yeah that’s hopefully a lesson learned that relying on AI will never help your career!

I have ADHD and I have days where I really struggle with simple tasks like this. I might end up rewriting a simple email response 20 times and wasting half an hour in the process when I could be focusing on much more important tasks.

I have adhd too and do exactly this. I’m also dyslexic too and have a lot of shame around how long simple writing tasks can take me, but I would never trust chat GPT etc alone. It’s often wrong, so everything needs fact checking, it’s often obvious it’s been used too, so I end up spending just as long rewording and taking out all the obvious indicators of it being an ai generated letter, it often ends up taking me longer. My anxiety around looking lazy to a future employer or forgetting to remove mistakes that would show I've obviously used it, would make me prefer to spend 20(+) mins writing a few simple lines.

Holymolyguacamoledipsandchips · 19/11/2025 16:59

Zkr623 · 19/11/2025 16:12

I added that line myself. So part AI, part me. 🤣 And yes, I know I screwed up BUT my question is more of, is this really a dagger stab to my chances?

Yes

JabbyMcJabFace16 · 19/11/2025 17:00

Well that’s what you get for being lazy

Well, it would be if I was the one hiring you. But I’m not, and nor is anyone else on this thread. However, if the job role requires any degree of attention to detail, then you certainly don’t deserve to get it.

Shutuptrevor · 19/11/2025 17:01

I’ve also weeded out candidates for this before- and any other obvious AI tells. I want to know YOU can do the job, not chatGPT, and I also want to know you care enough to put the effort in.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/11/2025 17:02

Terrytheweasel · 19/11/2025 16:38

Is it a third party recruiter or a recruiter working inhouse at the company?

If it’s the former, I wouldn’t worry. We (recruiters) are all using it - I would just think your attention to detail might not be the greatest but I wouldn’t worry.

If it’s the latter, it’s slightly more awkward but definitely don’t follow it up. Leave it and wait for the response.

Are you as a recruiter uploading potential candidate's CVs etc to an AI for analysis? Or are you running the AI infrastructure locally so you can ensure security for all that PII?

Ihavepaidalotforthisstory · 19/11/2025 17:03

AI hasn't screwed you. You did this to yourself.

Arlanymor · 19/11/2025 17:03

AI didn't screw you over - your reluctance to proofread did. It does smack of not really being arsed about the job, so why should anyone put you forward for it? Edited to say, it's your choice whether to apologise to Deanna and be human about it, or just let it go and hope for the best. An apology might result in some goodwill...

curious79 · 19/11/2025 17:04

You would have to be really stand out as a job candidate for me to now consider you. I'm just being realistic in a job market where sometimes you receive hundreds of applications.

A recruiter might however overlook this error

I check everything too but it doesn’t normally take me as long as that. For me, it’s like having a PA to do all the niggly tasks so I can focus on the important ones. I’m good at scanning and spotting errors.

Zezet · 19/11/2025 17:05

It would be over if I were the recruiter, to be honest.

NannyOggsScones · 19/11/2025 17:05

AI didn’t screw you over. You did this to yourself. If you put a spade through your foot it would be your fault. Bad workman blames his tools…….

BadgernTheGarden · 19/11/2025 17:06

It must have taken longer to get AI to do it than to do it yourself, particularly if you then added something, it was two lines... I might have a good laugh if I received it, but probably also cross you off the list.

Bloozie · 19/11/2025 17:08

I'm sorry, I would like to make you feel better, but I would judge you hard on this.

And probably share it around the office as an example of why it's so important to use AI carefully - with your personal details redacted, of course.

If you were an EXCEPTIONAL candidate, I'd still see you. But I'd take the piss mercilessly at the interview.

If I'd had loads of great candidates, I'd use it to filter you out.

I'm so sorry because I know that isn't what you want to hear.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 19/11/2025 17:08

Hopefully.

Seriously using AI is sheer laziness and shows a lack of employability.

Wouldn’t touch someone with a barge pole who used AI anywehre during the recruitment process.

And it is abundantly obvious when people do, because AI has certain phrases, certain words, certain patterns that you can spot it a mile off.

You have more important things to do than reply to a job interview? And AI is not a PA (yet) unfortunately as you found out, although a good PA would have put a pp which would also look bad!
