Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

I jumped off the career wheel when I had 3 children, retrained in Photography at evening classes and forged a new exciting career free of irritable bosses, bureaucracy and the rest.

Massive life change for aus all - but never regretted by any of us in spite of the massive drop in income.

My now adult children learned a lot from my example.

Maggiethecat · 27/08/2025 10:28

Glad that it’s worked out for OP, for the moment.
As other posters have said, there’s lots to be concerned about including the CEO’s behaviour and a stressful environment.
Nor should it be overlooked that OP has said that she doesn’t even really want the job, just the pay.
I would say start making plans to move on.

Again, that's nice for you but I'm going to take a wild guess that you weren't the sole/main breadwinner.

It's not that simple for most of us.

Mischance · 27/08/2025 11:24

My OH became ill at the age of 42 and was only able to work in a part time casual capacity so we did not have any financial cushion in fact. But he did not want me to continue in the stressful role I had. We downsized to release capital in order to make thisnposdible, and cut right back on many things.
It was a lifestyle choice not for everyone but it felt right for us in spite of the challenges.

(Disclaimer: I’m afraid I’ve only read OP’s posts and skimmed the rest.)

So this kicked off last week and resulted in much disruption of your holiday. Yesterday, you went into work and really got a grip of the situation. Even discovered more compliance problems to resolve and got a grip on those too.
Meanwhile last week your CEO was just stomping about having violent thoughts and firing off nasty emails to you. And he thinks you are the one that needs to learn from this?
Start looking elsewhere.

Yes I agree with this. “Have a jolly good think about what you’ve done” sounds like his tone. Yes reflective practice is very sensible - as a team - not just for one individual. The CEO has a bit of thinking to do too if you ask me.

But often as we know a crap corporate culture and tone from the very top leads to rubbish compliance - maybe this is par for the course…. And if so I’d want to leave them to it and go somewhere else!

Menopausalchunk · 27/08/2025 11:59

Good luck, have been there! Not easy but you get through it x

Tartantotty · 27/08/2025 12:06

More info needed. If this issue was your fault stay calm, no false excuses and offer to make amends as much as you can.

Will your colleagues be supportive? If not, maybe time to think about resigning as you will not want to work in a place with a bad atmosphere. Anyway, stay positive, learn from the experience.... and good luck!

I've just logged off for the day. My 12yo cooked dinner for everyone at home so I have pizza waiting and a good sleep.

I hope everyone else facing a bad day today is doing ok.

Genuinely, I’m so pleased for you.

I’m not as senior in my role, but that kind of stress is truly corrosive.

All the very best!

I agree with all the posters saying this.

TBH I'd give it a while but by very latest Christmas I'd be having a look what else might be out there and to start making an exit plan.

You don't have to act immediately but having an idea and maybe running a regular job search just to see what your options can't really hurt.

Chazbots · 27/08/2025 16:33

Yeah, it does sound like he's happy to rant and rave, then piss off leaving you to sort without much input. I'd be looking for something with more oversight at an earlier point and better procedures. You didn't ruin his holiday and it appears not his evening either.

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 11/09/2025 20:00

Update: It turns out I was right after all Hmm Almighty row has been had and I'm looking at job options.

OP posts:
Arlanymor · 11/09/2025 20:01

Oh no, what’s happened since?

AngelicKaty · 11/09/2025 20:03

Oh no OP, what's happened? 😱

ButterPiesAreGreat · 11/09/2025 20:04

Oh no, but sounds like the right thing to move on from there. Hope you’re OK.

heartmatters · 11/09/2025 20:04

Aww no. What’s happened OP?

Frostynoman · 11/09/2025 20:10

Right about what OP?

KookySnail · 11/09/2025 20:13

Have you been fired OP? Sorry to hear this.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 11/09/2025 20:16

“I had to make a judgement call while CEO was on holiday, did my best with the information I had available and kept him informed but facts have since come to light that would have made me call it the other way

Did he acknowledge anything about this then? Why is the blame presumably all on you now? Were you not kept in the loop or something?

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 11/09/2025 20:43

KookySnail · 11/09/2025 20:13

Have you been fired OP? Sorry to hear this.

The VP responsible for determining the facts basically fudged it and it's come out that he did so. The CEO's taken his side and told me to make it go away, while they both repeatedly spoke over me, patronised me and mansplained my job to me, and then told me to go away and think about it overnight like a naughty teenager.

I didn't get fired. I have a legally defined (and legally protected) role that makes me personally responsible for ensuring the company does this sort of thing properly. If they won't let me do so then my position isn't tenable.

Oh no, I'm so sorry it came to this.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 11/09/2025 20:49

id be fuming at being treated like that. I’m so sorry. How you doing?

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 11/09/2025 20:51

I'm furious and sad. I really think the company makes a positive difference in people's lives and I've valued contributing to that.

I am so sorry @ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay - I had followed your original posts and was happy to hear how it worked out. I guess now the dust has settled, the finger pointing has begun.
