Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

Change jobs.
This sounds nuts as a life.
Obviously you had the balls to make a call on the info you had, then that changed, now you will do your best to fix it, but it is potentially a big disaster.
Fault? Who or whatever was the cause of you not having full facts.
Not you.
If those facts just came out when they did, beyond anyone's control.
It's just a bugger you have to take responsibility for the call.

I'd say do you still want me? At the start of the meeting. Just to get that clear.

You’re probably feeling relief right now OP. But when you catch your breath, take time to analyse this. Would you, if CEO, treat yourself like this? No, you wouldn’t.
Update your CV. Get another job. This company isn’t good.

You were used by the CEO, who made you feel grateful because you kept your job. Think about that. Why did they put you in that position when you felt vulnerable in the first place? A good CEO doesn’t do that. You have integrity, you couldn’t enjoy your holiday, yet your CEO enjoyed his, disconnected from work, on far more money than you. Think about that.

In a nutshell, he hasn’t done you any favours. He’s played you like a fiddle. It happens, just don’t, gently, let it happen again.

This. And he told you he had violent thoughts? Dont be blinded by your relief.

Enrichetta · 26/08/2025 23:08

MAKE NOTES OF EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID and send them to yourself. Do it straight away, tomorrow, before you start questioning exact wording between you and can write what was said almost verbatim.

And start looking for other opportunities…

Soosiewoosie · 26/08/2025 23:08

Hope it wasn't as bad as you thought. Can you update us? 🙏

Augarden · 26/08/2025 23:09

You've got some great learning experiences now to talk about in interviews for better jobs! All the best OP. Think you need another holiday.

There can’t be much to update on. Pizza toppings?

What are you hoping to achieve with this response? OP needs to go into today with as much confidence as she can muster. If the information wasn't available, it wasn’t available. Her company could be opening themselves up to constructive dismissal if they insist on shredding her reputation.

Firstly constructive dismissal cases are difficult to win, so whilst you may consider it a contingency, it really is a stressful process that ideally you don’t want to rely on.

My point was, this doesn’t sound like the right role/employer for OP, it’s not normal to be this stressed outside of work. So it’s a question of choosing your own battles, is it worth fighting to stay at a stressful employer?

I've just logged off for the day. My 12yo cooked dinner for everyone at home so I have pizza waiting and a good sleep.

I hope everyone else facing a bad day today is doing ok.

Well done, OP. That's a tough challenge well handled. Fingers crossed the resolution works well

Once the dust is settled I'd move on from this company at a time of convenience.

Which is not the same rage quitting and taking a pay hit and a lower level job.

This 💯 %. I think when situations like this happen, we tend to panic, go onto every job site going and apply for (and even take) a lower paid job, I have done that in the past

Well done for handling the situation in the way you did. Take time to look for another job, as others have said, your current one sounds toxic.

In my 30 years in the workforce, I have left 4 toxic environments/bullying managers, and thrived in my next job.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 27/08/2025 00:16

Enrichetta · 26/08/2025 19:25

Absolutely.

I also agree with @Middlemarch123 - the CEO is only looking after his own interests and covering his @$$…

Yes.. it sounds like OP battled her way through finding a solution, which has also saved his bacon.

But I'm glad you made it through OP, must have been a very trying time and needed a lot of guts.. Hope the rest of the week is much nicer for you.

TootSweeties · 27/08/2025 00:27

Been following along and just wanted to say well done! Great tip from a PP on noting everything though. CEO sounds a little reactive…to say the least!

Bewareofstepfords · 27/08/2025 00:34

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 26/08/2025 18:56

Thanks all. My approach today is a lot different to how it would have been yesterday and I'm glad that I held my own without trying to make excuses or deflect responsibility.

The CEO's left for today. He popped by to check in with me and tell me to learn from it but if that's the only fire we need to put out, we're doing well. So much calmer heads all round I think.

How about HIM learning from it?
Flippin' brass neck of the man.

Loulouboho · 27/08/2025 00:52

How did it go OP?

Libertybellz · 27/08/2025 00:55

Well done Op, you handled things very well imo

Marchitectmummy · 27/08/2025 03:28

Pleased it ended well- I just wanted to add, people have been advising you should have taken your laptop away with you. However it appears your CEO wasn't available during the period of his holiday and while you were making decisions. Therefore I think that is totally incorrect advice why should you have an interrupted holiday while the CEO doesnt. Im a SME partner and no way would I expect an employee to work on their leave.

However, I also wouldn't expect a senior employee to submit something vital and shoot off on holiday, maybe if the dates of these improvements submissions are known in advance avoid booking leave around them. Same for the CEO to be honest. Your poor team too.

Its quite obvious from the OP that this wasn't something that could have been anticipated when she booked her leave.

sandgrown · 27/08/2025 06:45

So glad that the meeting wasn’t as bad as you thought . I do agree you should keep notes of everything said just in case there was ever another situation. Unless you particularly enjoy the job maybe start looking for something else x

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 26/08/2025 17:52

I saw before it got deleted. My boss jumped to the same conclusion but now that he's actually spoken to me and understands the information that I had, is happy that I did the best I could.

Ignore her, shes a vile woman.

MrsDoubtfire1 · 27/08/2025 07:08

Keep repeating to yourself 'I did my best in the circumstances'. You sound like a very good employee. You deserve to get to a position in another company where your thoroughness will be appreciated.

silkypyjamas · 27/08/2025 07:21

So sorry you had to go through the last few days after what should have been a relaxing holiday. I understand what your dilemma was with reporting to the regulators and agree that they view late reporting as a sign of poor governance, and transparency is what they value in firms if there is a clear treatment plan. So my question is.. what would you have done differently if the same situation arises? You are entitled to holiday and seemed to me to have handed over with as much information as you could, so to the comment from the CEO, what have you learned? (and its not to not go on holiday BTW)

ChaToilLeam · 27/08/2025 07:21

Good stuff OP. You kept your head and handled the situation to the absolute best of your ability. CEO sounds a twit though.

silkypyjamas · 27/08/2025 07:23

I would add, yes he does sound like a passive aggressive 4*ck

TooOldTo · 27/08/2025 09:40

(Disclaimer: I’m afraid I’ve only read OP’s posts and skimmed the rest.)

So this kicked off last week and resulted in much disruption of your holiday. Yesterday, you went into work and really got a grip of the situation. Even discovered more compliance problems to resolve and got a grip on those too.
Meanwhile last week your CEO was just stomping about having violent thoughts and firing off nasty emails to you. And he thinks you are the one that needs to learn from this?
Start looking elsewhere.

Eventmrs · 27/08/2025 09:54

Really pleased it's all going well and you have handled it better than you thought.
The CEO sounds like a typical CEO, but hopefully you can all get this sorted and sort out the skills gap in the business going forwards.

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 27/08/2025 09:55

FrontEndLoader · 26/08/2025 02:11

It's this kind of stuff that makes me glad I gave up my job in bid management at a FTSE company. By now I'd have been in the sort of position where I'd be calling the shots on £15m bids and taking on all the ownership.

Instead I turn up at 7pm and drive heavy plant for anything from 3.5-5 hours and get paid between £300-£350 per shift with every Friday off as a paid rest day - the builders travel home on a Friday.

It's not a job everybody would enjoy but I love it.

Sounds great, what is it you do and for whom? I’d love driving P&M!! 🤣
