Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

Your CEO has behaved appallingly from start to finish here. At least you know where you stand with him. I’d be looking for the exit

Me too. I made a mistake in my last job forwarding an email which apparently I should not have. I was put on a pip and it was the beginning of the end. It was just awkward and stressful after that and I realised I did not want to work for someone who would make a huge deal out of something that was partly his fault.

Thanks all. My approach today is a lot different to how it would have been yesterday and I'm glad that I held my own without trying to make excuses or deflect responsibility.

The CEO's left for today. He popped by to check in with me and tell me to learn from it but if that's the only fire we need to put out, we're doing well. So much calmer heads all round I think.

That's so cringey.

Great job @ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay . You can't change the past. You've come back to work, got to the bottom of what was happening, had a plan to move forward as well as look at how not to repeat going forward all before meeting the CEO. You've taken responsibility and recommended action.

AMemoryCalledEmpire · 26/08/2025 20:41

Well done, OP, you're decision to report on deadline sounds entirely reasonable to me - hope you sleep better tonight :)

Yodeldodeldo · 26/08/2025 20:50

Are you still there because there is a lot of work needed to recover from this error and manpower is needed? Or because the CEO realises he's on shakey ground dismissing you?

Don't be naive OP.

WifeOfAGemini · 26/08/2025 21:05

Massive well done OP! Sleep well, once you eventually log off

SparklyLeader · 26/08/2025 21:12

This on the CEO. The CEO is presumed to have all the facts or know where to get them, and is responsible for making sure you were fully informed so that your job performance does not impact his. Was the CEO asleep at the wheel? If you are let go, find an employment law attorney. Don't let the CEO cover their ass with yours. They are paid more money specifically to have oversight.

This is so relatable. I ruined a whole holiday once worrying about work emails. In the end it wasn’t as catastrophic as I imagined. Hope the same for you OP.

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 26/08/2025 21:18

I've just logged off for the day. My 12yo cooked dinner for everyone at home so I have pizza waiting and a good sleep.

I hope everyone else facing a bad day today is doing ok.

I am glad it went okay, and it sounds like you did so well.

Also having a bit of a crisis at work, well, an annoying thing but the bosses have made it clear they won't back me up as it's not worth it to them. Which makes me question my value at all and it's not nice.

Going to take some inspiration from you.

VintedVintage · 26/08/2025 21:28

Glad that today was not as awful as expected Flowers

Wynter25 · 26/08/2025 21:34

Venalopolos · 26/08/2025 17:34

Tbf I thought I had quoted the update an example of good leadership and I wish more of my bosses would act that way.

But also everyone here is an employee and no one, including the CEO, needs to be contactable when on holiday.

Edited

Agree with this

Wynter25 · 26/08/2025 21:36

Glad it went okay 😊 x

Fizzer5 · 26/08/2025 21:40

Well managed OP.
Do you think you know more about yourself than you did last week?
Maybe DD is also a star as well?
Sounds like teamwork family.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/08/2025 21:48

That's a good result, and the fact you handled it so well makes it even better.

Well done and enjoy your pizza

Middlemarch123 · 26/08/2025 20:11

You’re probably feeling relief right now OP. But when you catch your breath, take time to analyse this. Would you, if CEO, treat yourself like this? No, you wouldn’t.
Update your CV. Get another job. This company isn’t good.

You were used by the CEO, who made you feel grateful because you kept your job. Think about that. Why did they put you in that position when you felt vulnerable in the first place? A good CEO doesn’t do that. You have integrity, you couldn’t enjoy your holiday, yet your CEO enjoyed his, disconnected from work, on far more money than you. Think about that.

In a nutshell, he hasn’t done you any favours. He’s played you like a fiddle. It happens, just don’t, gently, let it happen again.

This.

Fuck him.

Take the experience, learn from it, put it on your CV, get a better job working for a company which treats its employees better.

Don't be dramatic, it was a crisis, they are now managing it.

This stuff happens a lot.

Wynter25 · 26/08/2025 21:34

Agree with this

So the CEO put OP in fear of losing her job, threatened her with violence and left at a normal clocking off time, pausing only to patronise her as he left, while OP worked until after 9 pm. And you think that he deserves to be congratulated as an example of good leadership? Sometimes I think I have woken up in the wrong universe.

I couldn't agree more. Wtf is wrong with some people?

Gonners · 26/08/2025 19:02

Your CEO sounds remarkably calm and sane, for a man.

Apart from his violent thoughts...

Yes, I definitely agree with both of these posts.
The buck always stops with the CEO and that's why they get paid the big bucks. I feel that this CEO abdicated his responsibility towards you and in your shoes, I would be worried about what could happen next time.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/08/2025 22:19

Can't believe the brass neck of the man swanning off before 6 o'clock with a patronising parting shot to the OP who carried on working until gone 9pm (leaving her pre-teen to get dinner on the table).

What a fucking twat.

I'd be coming down with a convenient bout of the flu in a month's time and spending the week getting 15 hours sleep a day and firing off perfectly honed CVs to every potential future employer I could think of.

Fuck him right in the eye.

azafata2 · 26/08/2025 22:20

Long time dead!! Not so long alive!! I would say get out. I know its money and I know we need it. In my death bed I will not be saying "Oh the CEO was calm but with violent thoughts I am so grateful..." Sorry live your life!!! And yes it is easy to change your mindset once you distance yourself from the traps we create. Bit hippy maybe but have a think. All the best.

KievLoverTwo · 26/08/2025 22:31

A CEO who admits to having many violent thoughts about a work error and who also bombards an employee with emails whilst they're on holiday is not worthy of the title of CEO, in my opinion.

I appreciate what you said about working bloody hard to get where you are, but I think you need to find another firm and go and work for someone who's not a bloody psychopath. Or, at the very least, work for a psychopath who's more capable of hiding it, because most CEOs do have psychopathic tendencies, apparently.

Unbelievable behaviour.

MAKE NOTES OF EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID and send them to yourself. Do it straight away, tomorrow, before you start questioning exact wording between you and can write what was said almost verbatim.

Rainallnight · 26/08/2025 22:37

Well done, OP, it sounds like you handled today really well.
