Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

Ace news OP

usedtobeaylis · 26/08/2025 18:38

Glad to hear it OP and hopefully you will have a more restful night's sleep tonight.

Although I can't believe people have said with all seriousness that checking work emails isn't working 😅

Mouthfulofquiz · 26/08/2025 18:43

The CEO indirectly alluded to violent thoughts? Jesus Christ. He sounds like an idiot.

Mischance · 26/08/2025 18:50

I agree. The violent thoughts bit us not ideal . ....

NavigatingMyLife · 26/08/2025 18:52

Sorry not had time to read all of this. But sending love & kind thoughts. Hopefully it wasn’t as bad as you thought it might be but your post struck a chord with me as I had a few holidays ruined by thoughts of work, and interruptions. Hopefully you’re banking a good pension from it for your future. X

ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay · 26/08/2025 18:56

Thanks all. My approach today is a lot different to how it would have been yesterday and I'm glad that I held my own without trying to make excuses or deflect responsibility.

The CEO's left for today. He popped by to check in with me and tell me to learn from it but if that's the only fire we need to put out, we're doing well. So much calmer heads all round I think.

Well done op ❤️

How stressful for you 🥺. You definitely need to book another holiday to recover from all of this!

Will you have to work late from now on, to sort it?

I didnt see the deleted replies but so glad you mostly got supportive comments x

Gonegrey31 · 26/08/2025 19:02

Good for you OP, you have dealt with it all brilliantly !

Your CEO sounds remarkably calm and sane, for a man.

ClearFoundation · 26/08/2025 19:07

I would make sure that his holiday and your holiday are not cheek by jowl next year - have a few days gap in between where you can hand back directly to him etc

when I had a fluff - it was exactly the same situation - they went, I went, things got balls'd up, they came back, I came back...

weirdoboelady · 26/08/2025 19:07

It's extremely kind of you to update us. I really felt knotted and invested, and it's a real lift to know that there are some reasonable people out there who are thinking things through. I had a similar event once in my early days as a CEO of a much smaller organisation, but with a very bullying Chair. Fortunately the other organisation involved took a reasonable view of things and did what I had predicted as the most likely action, which meant that we were not driven to the wall.

Shame he couldn't have found his zen last week instead of ruining the OP's holiday.

Middlemarch123 · 26/08/2025 19:20

Have followed this from the start.
Hope you’re ok OP.
Sorry if I go against other posters, but I wouldn’t trust your CEO further than I could throw him.

onlymethen · 26/08/2025 19:25

Well done for going in with answers and future plans. Hang in there as from your list of past jobs you seem like a great worker and deserve the salary, always with good salaries comes responsibility and I truly believe you are very able.

Absolutely.

I also agree with @Middlemarch123 - the CEO is only looking after his own interests and covering his @$$…

Byjimminy · 26/08/2025 19:30

OP you've done fabulously well. Keep your focus, continue getting through this on the same tack and when you're out the other side, put navigating all this down as a win! A great interview example of how you handled a situation that went wrong, for your next job Grin

I don't like the alluding to violent thoughts either, not appropriate at all to be sharing with you. I'd say keep your eye on the jobs market and be planning your next move, you've just chalked up some great experience Smile

I'm not head of all of compliance (we don't have that role) but head of the department that deals with this sort of thing. This has exposed a knowledge gap in less than ideal circumstances. We're not a huge company but larger than an SME.

The decision I made was to meet a regulatory deadline rather than spend any more time investigating and miss the deadline. The golden rule that gets rammed down all our throats during regulator training is if in doubt, report. You can always send a follow-up report afterwards when you have full information but regulators look dimly on late reports because it smacks of complacency or cover-up, so I stand by the decision. The new information is that we should have used a different process, which we're preparing to do now.

I don't know if it's the same area of compliance, but I have had to make the same type of call myself, and the regulator were very understanding - the clock only started sticking for the other compliance process once we took the decision that that process applied, not the first one.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 26/08/2025 19:49

OP, even if the dust has settled I’d be looking for other options. The CEO will likely have a target on your back now

Puppylucky · 26/08/2025 19:52

Blimey if my CEO "popped his head round the door" on his way home, whilst I was still frantically working away digging HIS company out of the shit, to tell me to learn from it, I wouldn't be responsible for my actions!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 26/08/2025 19:54

Well done! Sounds like you handled it well. Sorry it ruined your holiday though

MathiasBroucek · 26/08/2025 19:57

Pleased for you. Sounded like you did your best at each stage based on what you knew at the time and were treated fairly as a result!

I know cheeky beggar. But did he learn from it!?

Middlemarch123 · 26/08/2025 20:11

You’re probably feeling relief right now OP. But when you catch your breath, take time to analyse this. Would you, if CEO, treat yourself like this? No, you wouldn’t.
Update your CV. Get another job. This company isn’t good.

You were used by the CEO, who made you feel grateful because you kept your job. Think about that. Why did they put you in that position when you felt vulnerable in the first place? A good CEO doesn’t do that. You have integrity, you couldn’t enjoy your holiday, yet your CEO enjoyed his, disconnected from work, on far more money than you. Think about that.

In a nutshell, he hasn’t done you any favours. He’s played you like a fiddle. It happens, just don’t, gently, let it happen again.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 26/08/2025 20:13

Absolutely spot on @Middlemarch123

Becca3451 · 26/08/2025 20:15

It may not feel like it right now, but right now you need to remember work is just work. It's your family and good friends that are irreplaceable.

You know you did the best decision with the information you had at hand. You did your best. If work is constantly having this much if an impact, I would consider a different job ( even if it's less pay).

However if it's a one off and you can get through it, that's a different story.
