Fed up of being ghosted and unable to contact companies

Unemployed for 8.5 months now. Get interviews and they say they will be in contact regardless of outcome by x date. X date comes and go and nothing. I would love to contact companies but they respond with emails addresses that can't reply to, same goes for phone numbers. A couple of times, I have rang the switchboard/main number listed on website and ask to speak to recruitment - oh we are not allowed to transfer numbers to them or refuse to give me the direct number. Why?

It's vitally important that people have contact details as they could be unwell etc on the day of the interview to discuss the possibility of moving the interview.

If you have been interviewed, you should never be ghosted. Its very bad form. Whether it was with a company or a recruiter. Your last point - maybe worth chasing up a contact number/email at the time you get your interview invite for the reason you said. What is something happens on the day?

I've noticed an increase in ghosting during my job search too and its just awful. the job market is so shit for job seekers they know they can get away with it too.
