Applying for a new job- they ask your current employer for a reference BEFORE interview

I’m applying for a new job, and job spec says this-

“Please supply the names and contact details of two referees, one of which must be your current or most recent employer. We intend to take up reference on all shortlisted candidates before interview.”

Is it me or is this a bit shit? It means my current employer knows I want to leave and am looking for a new job before I’ve even been interviewed, and obviously there’s no guarantee I’ll get the one I’m applying for. I really like the sound of the job I’m applying for but this feels so risky. It doesn’t appear that there’s a way to opt out or until after interview/in the event of an offer.

I work in education. Safer recruitment does not require references to be taken up prior to interview. Interview is where the Panel can clarify the status of the referees - you'd be surprised how many applicants don't state their last two employers or give the name of their actual line manager.

Our application form says we may take references prior to interview but there is a box for the candidate to confirm theybare happy with this.

Once a flood two candidates have been even stevens and references could be the deal breaker. I can think of once in 20 years.

The key takeaway from this for me is if schools and the NHS are requesting references, for say five candidates, per panel, who are they kidding that they lack resources? Aside from the fact that ten requests out will only extrapolate to four references in, in the space of a week, and is a waste of everybody's time.

Far better to focus on the successful candidate's references, ensure they aren't from a colleague rather than a manager and read them whilst an offer can be withdrawn. Offers are conditional on pre-employment clearances.

@AngeloMysterioso just write on the application form that the details of yiur two.previous employers will be provided upon receipt of a conditional offer.

I moved into education support, and they understood the situation and didn't take up references until offer.

I work in education and they do this. I would explain your situation to the prospective job and I’m sure they’ll understand. They don’t want to make things hard for you I’m sure. Tell them they can take out a reference from your previous employer.
