Do you wear makeup to work?

Potentially Starting new role soon on site after long stint of WFH. I'm not fan of makeup day to day, but will make an effort for special occasions. It doesn't even look that good on me IMO and I have quite clear skin touchwood (provided thresholding, plucking all done lol).

Just debating whether to bother as it will mean buying new fresh makeup as I haven't updated it properly for a while.

It's an office role in finance.

The poster didn't say women should wear makeup to look suited and booted - she said for her.

But why would make up be a requirement for anyone to look suited and booted?

She said in her current role she needed to wear makeup to be suited and booted. I can’t think of any role where makeup would be required or necessary?

in my current role, I need to be reasonably suited and booted on a daily basis, and that includes makeup realistically for me

"For me". Not 'for women'. It's immaterial if you can't think of any roles where it might be required or necessary, the poster feels that part of being suited and booted involves makeup for her. She's not saying anyone else should feel that way.

Yes, always. If I had nice skin I'd love not to though.

No although I don’t wear make up outside of work either. I’m a teacher and whilst some of my colleagues do wear make up there are plenty of us who don’t.

I do - foundation or cc cream, concealer, eyeliner, mascara, powder, highlighter & setting spray. Takes about 10 minutes & I put this on everyday before I go anywhere.

I like to look my best every day & this helps me. Hats off to anyone who feels their beswithout t make up but that's just not me.

Zero make up. I am always presentable and professional, but that’s about it.

To weigh back in, I am in my 50’s and my face gets stressed and tired looking because of the job I’m doing. I also, personally, feel better when I have a layer of natural looking makeup.

I know part of that comes from low self esteem caused in childhood and a sense of imposter syndrome. And part of my way of overcoming that is have a calm confident mask on.

When I have family events, I am much, much more made up as I need a much stronger shield to protect me and hide my real emotions!

I do it for me. Not because I’ve been told to. Not for men. But because I work in a professional environment where I need to portray an image of being on top of things - even if that’s meant working until 2am and back up by 7am for the next round (definitely not unusual) and also where the people I meet can be confident I understand their concerns and will represent their views properly. And sometimes I have to push back on those views.

so the appearance of calm and in control is important.

I am actually very well able to do my job, but it is male dominated and that means I need to be seen as capable compared to them.

And the men need to wear jackets and ties, shirts be properly ironed, and while not needing makeup, do need to look properly groomed.

I also rarely wear other makeup elements like nail varnish etc. Just my own quietly groomed and professional appearance.
