Do you wear makeup to work?

HS1990 · 20/06/2025 07:03

Potentially Starting new role soon on site after long stint of WFH. I'm not fan of makeup day to day, but will make an effort for special occasions. It doesn't even look that good on me IMO and I have quite clear skin touchwood (provided thresholding, plucking all done lol).

Just debating whether to bother as it will mean buying new fresh makeup as I haven't updated it properly for a while.

It's an office role in finance.

Yes, every day without fail. I love it

But OP, if you can't be arsed, then please don't waste your time or money. I work in a corporate role, and some women wear a full face of make up every day, some never wear a scrap

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 20/06/2025 09:05

No. I work a manual job so it would probably not stay on my face anyway.

DappledThings · 20/06/2025 09:07

No, never. Some wear a bit, some none at all where I work. Very rare to see anyone with anything noticeable.

Moveoverdarlin · 20/06/2025 09:09

Always. Never gone to work without make-up. I would be so self conscious. I think I look completely different. Pale and tired without it. Awake, on the ball and put together with it.

Greenartywitch · 20/06/2025 09:13

I am 54 and I no longer wear make up for everyday activities, including work. only wear light make-up if I have a social occasion and never things like foundation or concealer.

I feel much better for it I must say :)

I must say that since I started doing that I find women who have a face full of foundation/fake tan rather 'mask like'.

I think we are conditioned by society and marketing to wear make up because we believe it automatically makes us look better when frankly I think I prefer to see people's actual face and individual character these days rather than the uniform 'doll' look...

ReginaaPhalangee · 20/06/2025 09:15

I only wear Estée Lauder watery glow primer. That’s it for me. I have lash extensions done so that really sets my eyes off. Gone are the days when I wouldn’t leave the house without a full face of make up lol

I wear makeup every day for my 12 hr + shifts in ICU.

I’m a 45 year old woman. It’s impossible for me to look like a doll.

OP if you don’t want to then don’t, it’s not a big deal other than for misogynists who either think all women need to wear makeup or think that those of us who do are ‘dolls’ or not showing our real faces.

No idea what the point the person who said ‘only the receptionist does’ is trying to make. I’m confident it’s not coming from a place of classist misogyny, of course.

Kelim · 20/06/2025 09:27

Nothing so complex. It's just that I was thinking through the women in our place in my head ("walking through") and she's the only one I can think of. I don't know if she does because she's "the face" of the office or for personal reasons. I don't know her very well.

bluecurtains14 · 20/06/2025 09:29

No, haven't for years. It isn't compulsory.

SirChenjins · 20/06/2025 09:31

Always have, always will. I have pale skin and dark eyes, so I use a bit of Hslo Glow mised with my foundation, blend it with a brush, a bit of cream blusher, lid liner, mascara and lippy. Takes me no more than 5 minutes and it's very light - no doll features here, whatever that means. No fillers, botox, or anything else - that's not a look I like - and I don't wear heavier makeup outside of work.

BoredZelda · 20/06/2025 09:34

Nope. Haven’t worn makeup for the last 30 years.

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 20/06/2025 09:37

Always made up. Absolutely. Brush Teeth. Have shower. Moisturise body and skin care re face and then make-up. Usually involves a base, eyeliner and Mascara, hint of blusher, setting powder and lip tint / balm. Just my habit. Never really noted if others wore makeup major bugbear was body / foot odour / bad breath. I once had to share an office with someone who had had one suit; I would dread hot weather because he took his jacket off - so we could all enjoy his malodorous self. He somehow got a girlfriend and stank even more after an amorous night. Another joy was a colleague who would never have been able to be a spy / burglar because you could smell his feet from when he entered the building - five floors down. Luckily, he was a massive skiver and always away sick until he became infatuated with another colleague.

SunPerson · 20/06/2025 09:44

Yes, I wear make up to work. Mascara, abit of neutral eyeshadow, abit of concealer, some cream blush and a tinted lip balm. It takes me about 5 minutes to do.

If you don’t normally wear it and feel uncomfortable doing so , don’t wear it. Honestly, no one is going to care either way.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 20/06/2025 09:45

The basics, because I look a bit corpse like if I don’t.

when I don’t people tend to ask if I’m tired

but if you don’t want to, there’s no reason to, it isn’t necessary to look presentable

ResidentPorker · 20/06/2025 09:59

Always. Foundation, translucent powder and mascara at an absolute minimum. Concealer if my skin is bad. Quite often eyeliner/eyeshadow. Sometimes blusher. I’m pale with a lot of redness and I look much better with it on. I don’t go for a full sculpted look; I’m trying to make my natural features look better rather than drawing on new ones, IYSWIM.

Natsku · 20/06/2025 10:08

No, would look rather out of place in my mostly male workplace and would all get wiped off when I wipe sawdust and whatnot off my face. There's one other woman that works there and I don't know if she wears make up or not, haven't noticed. We do have a young woman with us for a summer job and she wears make up but she's working mostly in the goods reception so not getting covered in dust.

But I wouldn't wear it for an office job either. Never have worn make up (apart from two occasions - year 11 prom and when I was a bridesmaid) and hardly going to start now in my late 30s.

It is your choice to take offence at my post.

I think it is a bit simplistic to suggest that someone who does not see the point of heavy make-up must be a 'misogynist' or a 'classist'.

To me realising that I did not need to wear a lot of make up and that people's natural faces are as interesting with little or not make-up was liberating as a middle aged woman and it helped me like myself more and worry less about what people think of me.

You have a different opinion, but that does not negate my own experience and you don't need to see my views as an attack either...

MooreMooreMoore · 20/06/2025 14:50

I wear make up to put the bin out 🤣

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 20/06/2025 17:54

Just out of interest why are you differentiating between WFH and working in an office? I work from home most of the time and wear make up. I would dress the same and do my make up the same going into the office. For me I am work either way. If your preference is not to wear make up and you don't usually when you work them not sure what difference going into the office makes.

Lottapianos · 20/06/2025 20:14

'If your preference is not to wear make up and you don't usually when you work them not sure what difference going into the office makes'

I agree with you, but I know a lot of women who wear make up in the office but none when WFH

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 20/06/2025 20:22

I use a tint that I put on lips and cheeks and also wear a mascara. If I look really tired I’ll put on tinted moisturiser and if I’m going out I’ll add eye liner (just a touch). I can’t manage without blusher. I’m dark haired with pale skin and the blusher makes me feel ALIVE! I tend to go overboard though (aunt Sally) and need to reign it in a bit. I bloody love blusher. I’ve told my kids that I’ll be running around my care home with heavy blusher on and if I’m not they’re to apply it for me. And when I’m dead. Loads of it!

socks1107 · 20/06/2025 20:23

I wear make up to work and when I wfh. I’ve always worn makeup and it was part of my uniform in past job.
I don’t think it matters though you just need to do what your comfortable with and want to do

RampantIvy · 20/06/2025 22:43

Because the webcams on our laptops aren't that good and out meetings are just with the team, not with customers or suppliers. I wear make up when I am in the office, but not at home.

DontTouchRoach · 20/06/2025 23:06

I do, but loads of women don’t. If you don’t want to wear it, don’t.

MP79 · 20/06/2025 23:13

If you don’t like wearing it then don’t. If you go in to work the first few days or weeks wearing make up, you might think about not wearing make up later but feel as if everybody would notice the change and end up wearing it forever. Also if you don’t have make up anyway, why buy it? I’m sure nobody would think anything of it - you wearing or not wearing make up! They’ll just accept you as you are. As they should.
