Random salary questions about the job description I have to write

I am trying to put together a coherent job description for an administrative assistant post in the arts centre where I work.

The job is part time 15 hours a week, someone has mentioned that 16 hours would be better for mums as they can then claim Family Tax Credit. Can anyone verify this? Its pretty poorly paid (£6 per hour) - anyone know what that is a year?

would it be about 5K per annum if 16 hours a week eg. 16 x 6 x 52

15hours x £6ph = £90pw x 52 weeks = £4680

so whats that if it were a full-time job? I want to put £x,xxx pro rata IYSWIM

ahhh would it be

40 x 6 x 52?

if it was a 40 hour week, i think our admin staff do 35 hrs

how do you know whether it should be a 35, 39 or 40 hour week? arrghh

so thatb would be

12,480 for a 40 h week
10,920 for a 35 h week

i guess you could just decide it for yourself?

Not sure how up to date this information is but have heared before about the 16hours/wk....

Working Tax Credit
You are entitled to the Working Tax Credit if you are employed or self-employed and:

are paid for working 16 hours or more per week
expect to work for at least another four weeks.
In addition you should:

be aged 16 or over and have responsibility for at least one child, or
be aged 16 or over and be disabled, or
be aged 25 or over and work at least 30 hours a week

and to get family's credit it is 16 h just checked website

You may think that is poorly paid, Enid, but it's more than Sainsburys etc pays - sounds like a good job to me!

Its a lovely job too especially if you are interested in the arts/education.

Try asking the Daycare Trust lot, Enid, they should be able to give you definitive info on family tax credit etc.

If you wanted to advertise a pro rata rate I think the usual thing would be to work out what it would be full time, i.e. 6/hour x 37.5 (or whatever you consider a full time week) x 52 = and advertise it at 11,700 pro rata. That's my understanding anyway when I see 'pro rata' applying to part time jobs, but I could be wrong. I think it would be clearer though to advertise it at 6/hr @ 16 hours/week!

Standard office working week is 35 hours rather than 40 if you do want to pro-rata it Enid.
I always think pro-rata salaries on p/t jobs are a low trick because the actual salary paid is always and inevitably teeny-tiny in comparison.
Assume you will not be putting "self-pitying old vixens welcome to apply" in the ad?

I'm sure there must be something legal you could do to her to stop her disseminating this kind of lie - maybe even a solicitor's letter would stop her in her tracks. What a huge PITA.
