Career Advice - Moving from Small Charity to Council Finance Role

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a Finance Manager in a small charity, managing the full finance functions. While I’ve gained a lot of experience, I now feel it’s time to move to a larger organisation where I can get better support for training and progression, especially as I’m still working towards completing the final stage of my qualification.

I’m looking for somewhere I can grow professionally and progress to roles like Financial Controller or similar in the next 3-5 years.

I’ve seen some roles advertised at the local council, but I noticed the finance team is very large, and the jobs seem quite similar to Finance Officer level, and the responsibilities don’t seem to cover broadly.

If anyone can share examples of the kind of day-to-day tasks involved in council finance roles, that would be really helpful. I’m trying to understand what the work is actually like compared to what I do now in a small charity.

Do you think it’s a good move to take a step like this if I’m aiming for long-term career development?

Also, if I take a council job:

it generally easy to move up the ladder within the council?
Would it be easy to return to industry in the future if I want more development opportunities?

Would really appreciate any advice or shared experiences!

I don't know about the specific role, but I would be cautious about taking a council job atm if it's an area which is going to be reorganised (eg Oxfordshire) as that is likely to lead to redundancies.
