If you work for a small company, do you get a pay-rise every year?

Hi Ladies,

I'm just wondering this really? I work for a small firm, only 6 employees.

As part of my job (mortgage administration) I see other peoples payslips every day & I see that a lot of people seem to get an automatic pay rise every year, usually in April even if its just to keep up with inflation.

I'm just wondering if this is only a larger company thing as the last 2 places I have worked (small firms) definitely haven't done this? Many Thanks

i spent years working in small companies with no regular rise. I once managed to get one by coming up with a sob story about needing it for my mortgage because it was going up and did then get it, but if I hadn’t had a “reason” don’t think I would have done. Now I work in a large organisation and salaries go up twice a year!! Each winter you move up one notch on the salary scale, and in the summer they increase the value of all of the scales. I know how lucky this is!!

Nope, I've worked for several small companies and it's not guaranteed.

Hardly anyone gives increases that cover inflation - it was around d 10% at one point!

It’s not just small companies though. I worked for one of the country’s biggest charities with thousands of employees and didn’t get any increases.
