Personnel file

I've submitted a request to view my personnel file. Some of my colleagues have been contacted to resubmit information lost/destroyed by HR and I'd like to check that HR have stored all my information safely.
I expect to find my contract, medical completed for job and records of illness and correspondence from me there. What else should be there?
Would emails from managers to HR be there for example?
Just want to let HR know that I'm on the ball so to speak!

It sounds more like you are interested in possible correspondance between your managers and HR!

Is there another reason you want to see the file?

umberella · 12/05/2008 09:24

correspondence, rather , i hate that.

Yup, you're right! I'm quibbling with them over my contract and a perceived conflict(mine) in terms of the work they are giving me, so I'd lurve to be able to see what they've said to HR about it.

e-mails might or might not be there - would depend if they were formal or informal. I certainly wouldn't be daft enough to file informal e-mails about my staff in there personal files.

Under data protection law you have the right to see every piece of info your company holds on you. This includes info on your personal file but also on any other systems your company has eg emails sitting in your company system or other people's inboxes!. Check out www.ico.gov.uk, it will tell you how to make a request to your employer.

Thanks zebedee, I'm in Ireland but usually our laws are similar, I'll have a look around. [smile!]
