I’m sick of “professional” work. Mid 40s, have no kids and just want to have a nice, content, easy life, not interested in striving to earn hundreds of thousands. Currently earn around £200k between us, but could easily live off half that.

My background is marketing, husbands is sales but I am just seriously lacking in ideas. A coffee shop or deli sounds ideal but surely that is a cliche?! Please give me some ideas of potential businesses or even franchises that could give us a decent quality of life without the daily drudgery of working for someone else! There must be more to life. If you’ve done similar, would love to hear some success stories.

I don't think you are being delusional, but I think owning/running some type of coffeehouse/restaurant/store seem to be really hard work, and stressful! But I also know that it's a dream that many people have.

Many people recommend working for a while in the kind of establishment that you want to run. So if you want to start your own coffeehouse, work for a while in a coffeehouse, to see what it's like. What challenges are there? What do the customers like/dislike?

There are quite a lot a threads here on Mumsnet about starting your own business/buying into a franchise, do a search!

Good luck!

Anything that earns you decent money is going to involve quite a lot of daily drudgery tbh. At least to start with, perhaps less so if it really takes off and you can afford minions to do that stuff.

You could quit your job if you could live off half of your household income.

Or you could both go part-time, and you'd still have a reasonable income.

Or one or both of you could start consulting instead, and you'd probably be OK.
