Payroll have taken £175 off my salary this month for 'basic pay arrears'.

Surely they can't just take money off without asking me?

I do owe them £400 from an overpayment when I came back to work, but they said they would send me an invoice and I could pay it in whatever way I saw fit.

They probably can osmosis. I expect there is a clause in your contract saying they can recover any overpayment or other monies owing from your salary.

Having said that, if they said they'd invoice you and you could pay it however you like, that's a bit off.
