would you raise this or does this sound petty

I work as part of a 2 person team. colleague and I do identical work. over the last year, she did less and less. I am a workhorse and just cracked on with stuff that needed sorting and felt I do much more but wasn't too bothered. Anyhow, last week I decided to pull the figures from the system and I do about 4 times as much as she does (it's easily quantified, no idea why I didn't raise it before and why manager never raised it. I guess since the work gets done, nobody is checking). colleague is senior to me and earning much more which irks ms hugely given the backseat she has been taken all year
. Would you raise this and if you are a manager, what would you make of it. I worry I look anal an petty.

I would request a promotion to her level of seniority and pay, and use the work completed as evidence 😀

BruceAndNosh · 18/11/2024 09:17

Not remotely petty. You should be paid the same as colleague

my company does not work like that. raising it will not bring about better pay or a promotion. I am very clear on that .

Leaving aside the issue of why you silently picked up her slack for four years, why on earth are you doing an identical job to someone considerably senior and better paid?

truegum81 · 18/11/2024 09:18

very peculiar that if you can pull the figures very easily… then this isn’t used by the business for monitoring performance

it's a blind spot. they only check stuff if things don't get done.

So…. this company sounds very odd generally. Surprised it’s survived four years tbh

only started this year really. not four years. I do 4 times the amount of 'cases'

If she is more senior than you, she isn't doing the same job as you. I'd assume her job involves doing some of what you do and additional stuff as well.

thinkfast · 18/11/2024 09:22

It doesn't sound petty at all and you absolutely should raise it with your manager OP.

senior as in longer in the same role and hence higher pay but otherwise we are doing the exact same role and job.

I would tell your manager you are suffering from burnout and say you feel your colleague isn’t working as hard as you. Say you are so frustrated you pulled the data (4x as much work as colleague) and ask manager to comment.

Is there any chance colleague doing other work you don’t know about?
Any chance colleague handling higher complexity than you?

If you don’t get the response you want (bonus; raise; work more evenly distributed) then I would ease off the hard work. No overtime . Enforce lunch. Don’t do favours for anyone - work strictly on your own job. Frequently update manager and colleague that team is behind now on work. Ask specifically if colleague can handle x, y and z as you don’t have time.

You are being taken for a ride

its not petty to stand up for yourself

so the business is only a year old? and you started at formation?

truegum81 · 18/11/2024 09:26

is this a small family run and owned business OP?

How long has your colleague worked there?

no, business is much older. both been there for years but noted the slacking over the course of this year. Team was much bigger last year so may have been going on longer but I may have not noted as there were several shoulders to share the load. but we have been a 2 person team since beginning of this year. much more obvious this year. I only could get this years figures from the system too.

She didn't say it was a year old, or anything like it. She also didn't say 4 years... people just make shit up here?

Jerdect · 18/11/2024 09:30

I would approach this as you are struggling to cover the work and can you have a look at workloads etc.
Ask for a meeting with your manager to discuss this and let them pull the figures. Ask them to help you prioritise the job tasks as you're struggling to cope at present.

But do something about this NOW. I've been in your shoes as it was due to MH issues with the colleague. But expecting me to pick up all the slack resulted in us both being off sick and no-one to cover the work🤷‍♀️

manager does them only once a year in Feb/March. So haven't had one in a while and not one due till 2025 (when line manager will be in mat leave).

Do you get on with her personally?

she has been slacking this year. last year, the team was much bigger so load was shared on many more shoulders. She may have slacked but not really notable due to team size and work load distribution. but really standing out this year. it has probs been going on much longer .hope this makes sense
