would you raise this or does this sound petty

I work as part of a 2 person team. colleague and I do identical work. over the last year, she did less and less. I am a workhorse and just cracked on with stuff that needed sorting and felt I do much more but wasn't too bothered. Anyhow, last week I decided to pull the figures from the system and I do about 4 times as much as she does (it's easily quantified, no idea why I didn't raise it before and why manager never raised it. I guess since the work gets done, nobody is checking). colleague is senior to me and earning much more which irks ms hugely given the backseat she has been taken all year
. Would you raise this and if you are a manager, what would you make of it. I worry I look anal an petty.

I am not raising it to get a raise. I just want them to be aware of the unfair distribution of work load.

how do you know she’s better paid out of interest?

Im guessing you don’t have kind of relationship that you can talk to her about it

so you’re only choice, obviously, is to talk to your manager

jolene7 · 18/11/2024 10:07

Who distributes the cases ?

how long ago?

Who distributes the cases ?

we pick emails up from a joint inbox and action those. Nobody is technically allocating the cases. We self allocate if that makes sense.

when was last time you received a pay rise?

Do you have a positive relationship with your manager?

so… there’s no target or measurement

so she’s not doing anything wrong

you are choosing to do 4x more

end of last year.

how much more in %?

WaystarRoy · 18/11/2024 10:13

What would you like the outcome to be from raising this?

  1. no raise this year as business not going well. line manager is managing a huge department. next to zero involvement with our team as we tend to get on with stuff and work gets done. Management is poor (but has its advantages not being under the microscope).

i just want line manager to be aware. I am not sure what I am hoping for. probably her having a word with colleague. I don't know. if you were a line manager, would you not want to know?

given no targets and no measurements and you just go to inbox and pick your job

shes not doing anything wrong

DemonicCaveMaggot · 18/11/2024 10:20

I would raise that you appear to be handling four times as many cases and ask for recognition or for it to be documented at the very least.

This is an odd set up. In my last managerial role each department was given a budget for pay rises and if someone was doing extremely well they got more of the budget, and if someone was performing poorly they got a lower pay rise.

jolene7 · 18/11/2024 10:23

Ok, so if you distribute the work yourself, why are you raising the distribution of work to management ?
I have no idea what level of work you're doing so it's quite difficult to confidently assess but I have had senior positions in a few very large organisations and if a direct report came to me about this the first thing I would ask is "have you tried to resolve this yourself" ?

This is a very common situation in any working environment and normally people come up with a solution, for example every other email is picked up by one person. Or each week someone takes the roll of allocation and adds equal amount of cases to each person.
It's not actually a hard one to resolve at all and i would absolutleu advise against raising this type of issue with management.

Don't worry about others. Concentrate on yourself.
Also, when you develop this new process of workload distribution. Take this to your next appraisal and use it to ask for a raise. ;)

my company does not work like that. raising it will not bring about better pay or a promotion. I am very clear on that .

So why is she senior to you whilst doing identical work?

I think you do need to properly think about this. What is the impact to the business? Do some cases not get done on time, for example? If all the work is getting done on time and you are not feeling overwhelmed, then why would they be bothered? Some people work faster than others.

This. Absolutely insane to bring this up without being clear - to yourself and to you boss - on what you want out of it.

SilverChampagne · 18/11/2024 10:25

Read the updates, it's an internal thing about being there longer and getting generic pay rises as a matter of time.

potatocakesinprogress · 18/11/2024 10:30

They likely aren't aware so you could raise it, but the outcome is likely to be they take her to task over it and she's going to be annoyed.

If they go in very generally saying they were checking the system she might not blame you for it, but if it comes out that it is you it's probably going to make her petty toward you. If your goal is to have her take more of the load or show you've been doing loads for your own career I'd report it.

jolene7 · 18/11/2024 10:31

No, I don't think the manager will want to know anything thay is easily resolved by the team themselves. I would be happy to hear about it once resolved and will give a big pat on the back. Also happy to help with issues that are not moving towards a resolution for whatever reason.

I have absolutely zero interest in just hearing about someone who is resentful opting to allocate themselves more work and is telling me for reasons they aren't even sure of...

mm81736 · 18/11/2024 10:33

Why is she Senior to you if you do identical work? Are you sure she doesn't have additional tasks you are not aware of

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 18/11/2024 10:33

@Cheshireicecream what is she doing while you are knocking your pan in?? why dont you just slow right down and only start a new task when she starts one? that way it will definitely come to the notice of the bosses! if you are not happy doing that then I suggest you look for another job before you bring it up with your manager
