I'm leaving and suddenly the world of work needs to be done

Just need to vent and get through the next 5 weeks.

Organisation I work for (public sector) are closing in next 18 months due to, basically, no money. Cuts on resources like everywhere have gotten worse over the last year, and it's become intolerable. People are jumping ship left right and centre, some are holding out for redundancy and/or retirement, no one knows what going on/decisions haven't been made or kept quiet and to put it bluntly, it's a complete shitshow.

My line manager left in July due to uncertaintyof job security, she wasn't replaced so I was left with someone who is chaotic in her approach to leading a team. I'd been looking for a job as I can't hold out for redundancy, I'm a single mum and have a mortgage to pay (I know everyone needs their job but I mean I couldn't hang around waiting for redundancy/job uncertainty). Found a new job, leave in 5 weeks.

Since then, people don't seem happy for me (I guess because they are worried about their own position) and suddenly I've been given a shit load of work to get done before I leave, to the point the next 5 weeks will be hell. And because I'm owed 3 days annual leave still which has to be taken before I leave (as won't be paid for untaken leave instead) I've been told "oh can you take some mornings off instead of whole days so you can get the work done".

I know they probably feel like I've left them in the lerch but I had to do what was best for my family; have job security. They are making me feel bad for handing in my notice. Just need to get through next 5 weeks!

Well done on prioritising your health OP. Feel the weight lifting from your shoulders and get some rest before you start in your new job. Hope they pay you the leave you are owed in your final pay.

I'm so burnt out I can't even think straight! I won't get the money for any leave that was owed, but I get full sick pay so it's fine 🙂

You should still be entitled to payment of any accrued annual leave . Bless you. You sound utterly exhausted. Next few weeks, just focus on getting some uninterrupted rest if you can. Essential tasks only and give yourself a break

I am a member of a fitness club so might start swimming during the day and doing some classes. I'll take me vitamins and drink water. My friends are shocked at how drained I look!

Just do what you can, prioritise as you see fit if no one else will, email management every week with what you've been to do/what's outstanding.

Take the leave at the end of notice- leave three days earlier. Work your contracted hours only.

Igmum · 01/11/2024 14:58

Well done for prioritising your health. I hope the month proves really healing and good luck in your new job

loropianalover · 01/11/2024 15:05

Delighted you’re signed off OP! Lots of relaxation these next few days/weeks, swimming sounds good and gets you off devices for a while too which I love.

nomorehocuspocus · 01/11/2024 15:26

Good for you, you've done the right thing and maybe now you can relax a bit and sort yourself out. All the best Flowers

This job sounds like it has caused you to absolutely burn out. Rest and look after yourself. Some gentle exercise and some good sleep and nutrition / fluids will help you feel better.

Arh my line manager just text me on WhatsApp asking me to allow editing on a file, I made sure they could edit before I left on Friday and I know for certain her line manager can edit as she made changes last week. So bloody cold to text at 8am asking me to do something at work when I'm off sick for burnout 😡

Just do what you can, fuck them. What are they going to do, sack you?

endofthelinefinally · 04/11/2024 08:25

Just message back saying already done, then turn your phone off.

endofthelinefinally · 04/11/2024 08:26

I would say don't reply but presumably they can see you have read the msg.

I looked at the message on my notifications so didn't actually open it on WhatsApp.

Healingsfall · 04/11/2024 08:36

I can't turn my phone off as I need it for Spotify and talking to friends but I will be ignoring it! Surely contacting someone who's clearly that stressed and burnout from work at 8am on the first day is just bloody out of order.

@Healingsfall Archive the chat from her, you don't need to open the message to do that. Respond this afternoon, or tomorrow. After she has asked her own line manager. You're signed off you don't have an obligation to respond.

Good luck in your new job and I hope you are fully refreshed by then.

Totally out of order!! Wow, how disrespectful of your health.

Do you need to keep their details, or can you block and delete?

ProfessorInkling · 04/11/2024 08:47

They’re a bunch of bastards and you’ve done the right thing - you are important and need to rest and get well, fuck them.

Mute and archive any work chats, don’t look at them or check how many messages you’ve received.

You tell them to prioritise each task, from highest to lowest as you will only be working your set hours and will be taking your holidays. You do what you can in that time based on priority order

I just wanted to say, pls take this time to recharge.

With regards to the text send a polite response at your leisure, explaining that X has access and that you will not be responding to any further texts or calls on your GP's advice.

And finally, wishing you every success in your new role... my last job started when I was 59 and although I was due to retire earlier this year, I am still working as I enjoy it so much, so there really is hope at the end of the tunnel!

Ignore ignore ignore.

They can ask IT to sort that out.

A million percent this!

Under no circumstances (as you've already mentioned the business/area is to close) should you work longer than your contracted hours and I'd also put in for the time off NOW so that you can all work around them.

If I were you, I'd be planning on taking a few Fridays or Mondays off.

I hope you find a job soon.

LookItsMeAgain · 04/11/2024 12:21

Healingsfall · 23/10/2024 21:43

That sounds like a plan lol 😆 Unfortunately they can't do it in the morning as they are working (for our organisation) 😕

Isn't your organisation closing or is it just your part of the organisation that is closing?

If the organisation as a whole is closing, when does it matter when the training/whatever gets done?

FriendOrNo · 04/11/2024 12:28

Why didn't they video you delivering the training to the first group and then replay to the others but allow q&a type sessions at convenient times to you?

tribpot · 04/11/2024 13:27

Mute and archive the chat, that's what I've had to do this weekend to avoid toxic work content. Or just block them. They clearly don't think you should be off sick and I suspect this is going to keep happening.
