What's your best work gossip/drama?

I'm self-employed (and love it), but I do miss the gossip and petty work drama. Anything good to share?

In my past jobs, the most shocking was a TA who lied and said that she had given medication to a kid when she hadn't (because she had forgotten). Not really gossip, but I also had a coworker who literally hadn't eaten any vegetables her whole adult life.

Big (married) boss (wanker of the highest order, but married to the loveliest lady ever) and a floor manager (also married) where rumoured to be shagging

God only knows why anyone believed it as the woman who started the rumour, was the biggest shit-stirrer ever (and a racist to boot)

It turned out to be a load of bollocks and almost ruined both marriages

Racist bitch kept her job,and was promoted-as far as I know, she's still there-she started the rumour and then swore she hadn't said a word

Kept everyone in gossip for months-I really felt so sorry for the manager, her husband and big bosses wife

They didn't deserve that

Big boss was a creepy twat who used to follow the young girls round and harass them (being young and first job, they felt they couldn't say anything)

He finally left when he did it once too many and the girls got together and complained to hr

One of my first jobs as graduate trainee many years ago in a public sector professional team. The team leader was (to me) a sophisticated woman in her thirties and a role model to aspire to but junior staff in the office sometimes bitched that her perfect life wasn't all it seemed (always talking about rich boyfriends and a glam lifestyle). After passing her final professional exams after several years of p/t study, taking exam leave every year, she was promoted to manage another team (a big step up in responsibility) and bought cakes for all to celebrate qualifying. Couple of weeks later we were all summoned to the top Director's office to be told she'd been sacked - given her new responsibilities he'd had her CV details re-checked and discovered she'd never sat a single professional exam. I suppose it was easier to get away with that sort of thing then. Sometimes wonder what she did next.

Wow! Bringing in the cakes to sell the lie--devious!

A colleague called in sick and was then seen on television watching Andy Murray play on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

One guy said he was taking a day off to go to a union meeting. He never went to the meeting and enjoyed a day in London on expenses but got found out and sacked.

One manager was going round sniffing girls pants from the sports bags. They secretly filmed to see who it was and the manager got the sack.

One admin person beside me used to ‘go out for lunch’ everyday with one of the top execs. Her husband rang to speak to her and the admin said she’d was on annual leave (when really out for the day with the exec). Her husband said his wife had told him she was going to work. The admin said she was not in the office (and other admin came off the phone saying she wasn’t going to lie on behalf of the woman).

I’m confused by this one and who lied about what. Did Admin 2 lie and say Admin 1 was on annual leave when she was actually off shagging the exec - in which case she DID lie for her? And then said she’s not in the office when the husband thought she would be? Why was she saying “I won’t lie on behalf of Admin 1” if she’d already done that?

A ghost!! Seen by 3 different people. I don't want to see it, and I don't like all the talk about it!

You'd rather have a piece of toast and watch the evening news? 🤣

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/06/2024 11:56

Most of the ones I’ve been told about. Young woman who used to come into the office with her boss (who were businesses we did business with, she worked for her dad), she’d been having an affair with her married boss for years.

Receptionist in another job before I joined, they discovered lots of bottles of spirits in her desk drawer.

Large removals company, the older than me but still youngish woman colleague in a sort of mid level position she was shagging her boss (director or manager), was told it was when they were away on business but probably happened a lot. Same company, one of the accounts assistants was swindling the company, making payments to himself and thought he’d get away with it, told me once “i’m
swindling/screwing them”, got caught and sacked, no idea if he got jail or not but was in his 20s.

My aunt’s tile company the accountant creamed off quarter of a million for herself and I think was jailed for it.

At an architects, once one of them told me she was working late and heard noises in the stairwell, thought it was thieves. Looked and saw cleaner (older not attractive) shagging his female colleague there. Countless affairs in that office too, all between architects or similar. And married. No shame really.

One day a woman rang the office asking to speak to her husband as there was a crisis at home . HR had to tell her he was on annual leave as he could not be contacted.

Turns out he wasn't there as he had taken annual leave and made believe he was going to work as normal but had actually gone fishing for the week. Omg when he got home 😂

Where did she think he was in the evenings/overnight?

@loropianalover

He left to go to work as normal and came home as normal.

As in made believe he was going to work but was going fishing. We think he had done this for years before he got caught out .

This thread has made me forget the pain of my evening commute.

This has just cemented in my mind that people swindle money out of companies and have affairs all the time.

I wish I had juicer gossip, like a colleague was a murderer. But then on the other hand maybe not.

LSTMS30555 · 13/06/2024 19:41

I'll be back to this thread later

Grin

Although I sometimes take a day off without telling anyone if I have enough leave /Flexi left not for any nefarious reason but just because I know that if I tell anyone DH will suddenly decide to WFH or a child will mysteriously fall ill!

I bimble around at home in peace and walk the dog and it's heavenly!

Fgfgfg · 13/06/2024 21:43

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain No, you really don't want juicier gossip. I was scrolling through the local news' 'who's been locked up this month' page and up pops an ex colleague sentenced to 16 years for historic sex offences against young children.

Soboredofdiettalk · 13/06/2024 21:50

One woman, got exceedingly drunk at our office Christmas lunch. She spouted some borderline racist stuff, called a lot of people cunts, was really, really rude to the VP, tried to do that trick where you pour sambuca over your hands and set it on fire in the middle of a cute wee village pub, phoned her husband to come and get her but when he walked in the door she was straddling a junior member of staff. She got told her contract wasn't going to be renewed the next day and she was gone within a week 😬

In a different job we had a guy walk out of work and have a nap on a grassy bank in the middle of the day. He was a barman who worked two jobs, so think he was tired, but possibly drunk.

I've known one person to be dismissed on the spot for coming into work in a restaurant still high from the night before and several people sent home for being hungover

AnneElliott · 13/06/2024 21:57

I so love Weedophile. I have several but would have to name change for most of them as some of the people are well known!

One colleague though years ago had an hilarious email exchange with a senior colleague where he ended up accusing her of sleeping her way to promotion and he sent it to his whole team. It quickly went viral throughout the civil service and made the Sunday papers.

GrandesRandonnees · 15/06/2024 11:39

We employed a new salesperson for her language skills. My boss was a little suspicious about her credentials, so I checked her references/academic record and the university had no record of her ever being enrolled. But boss went ahead anyway. She was allegedly descended from foreign royalty, mad as lorries and great fun on a night out. But she didn’t sell very much, plus there was an apparent problem with the old Bolivian marching powder, and eventually she got given the heave ho. It then transpired that she’d been paying the rent on her Mayfair flat with the company credit card. She later turned up in a book written by a certain political commentator and free-school founder. Hiring her was not one of my boss’ best decisions, but she was entertaining at least.

Blimey some of these are really shocking and I work in a really boring scandal free office.

Marking my place.

MegsNaiceJam · 19/06/2024 00:31

Person A was very toxic at Office A. She left recently and has joined a rival company, Office B.

I have connections to both companies.

This week I was at Office B. They don’t know my connection to Office A. I overheard them calling their new colleague, Person A, “that really annoying woman”.

Office A will bloody love to hear that as Person A was annoying and toxic and caused lots of dramas. I can’t tell anyone what I overheard, but I have a little wry smile that Person A thinks they are universally loved when clearly the new place has sussed her.
