How much do you pay you commute/park each day for work?

I started a new job a few weeks ago and I'm really struggling with the parking situation.

Basically, our office has very limited parking and, as the newbie, I don't have a space.
Parking nearby is between £16-24 a day
There is a car park about a 15 minute walk away that's £9 a day

I can't do park and ride because I can't get there in time for the 8.30 bus, and the next one is 8.55 so I'd be late for work.

I'm really not sure what, if anything, I can do. I work 3 days a week, so looking at £108 a month if I use the cheaper car park.

Basically, what I want to know is, do you think that's reasonable? Should I ask if I can claim it back as expenses or is car parking generally considered just part of having a job?
Should I kill a member of the team so that I can take their free office space?

You should have researched the cost of getting to work and no it's not reasonable to ask to reclaim these expenses.

Fuel currently "free" at point of delivery due to solar panels/PHEV car.

We have limited parking spaces at work, which we can book the previous week. A different office I visit is served by an excellent P&R scheme - free parking, £3.60 return.

Luckycloverz · 12/05/2024 08:16

Free car parking in residential streets, and use a fold up electric bike from my car to ride 5/10mins into work.

mitogoshi · 12/05/2024 08:23

I have free parking at work, or I can park on street for free if I can't use that for some reason. Costs me £2 a day in fuel, cheaper than the bus which is £8 return and far quicker as the drive is 14-16 minutes and the bus is 1 hour 40 minutes ! That's rural living

PatchworkElmer · 12/05/2024 08:35

£6.50 a day to park. Increasing to £7.50 from September! Costs me over £100 a month to park to do my job, which is annoying- but I did know that when I took the role.

MrsWimpy · 12/05/2024 09:25

I drive about 2 miles across the city, takes about 10 minutes. Costs about £40 a month. They pay for parking.

socks1107 · 12/05/2024 09:27

£42 a day.
I buy a yearly season ticket though so it works out cheaper but not sure what the breakdown would be

This. I think it is your responsibility to get to work and travel and costs are not your employers concern.

TidyDancer · 12/05/2024 12:18

I walk to work on office days so technically my commute is free. I don't bother driving much these days at all. If I was to get public transport we are covered here by the £2 each way bus fare cap so if I was in the office every day and got the bus both ways it would be £20 a week. I walk more for health reasons as I do quite long hours some days and it's the only chance I have for exercise but the money saved is a nice bonus!

I had, and they had told me they had free parking available. I didn't find out until my first day that actually no spaces were available

That would be fair if they hadn't told me they had free parking.
I only asked about expenses because on my first day my manager said to just use the really expensive car park right outside and expense it

I can get a free space once a week. Commercial parking is £15. Or £4 for the bus.

Lots of people have said about JustPark, OP.

Definitely worth a browse.

Coffeesnob11 · 12/05/2024 20:45

When I commute to London I use just park, horizon or yourparkingspace. You would be better booking it in advance too. Here are the ones that are available now. Just to say could you park further out and use a folding bike to get in?

If they reimbursed you for your commuting costs it would be taxable.

An employer would not reimburse commuting costs - HMRC regs.

if the employee is classed as a home worker in their contract, that could be reimbursable, but technically it wouldn't be called a commute.

bluecomputerscreen · 13/05/2024 06:01

16€ for the train and 1€ for secure cycle parking.

work pays half of it (but not half of parking unless motability).

is cycling or cycling & train an option for you?

Bewareofthisonetoo · 13/05/2024 06:07

I could cycle but usually drive (10mins by car, 30 by bike) as route to work is uphill… park in a residential street. So only cost is petrol/wear and tear on car.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 13/05/2024 06:11

Surely you would check the commute costs and logistics before taking a job?

anywherehollie · 13/05/2024 06:21

A 13 minute drive (so however much in petrol that is) then free work car park.

I'm a civil servant.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 13/05/2024 06:28

The parking allocation sounds unfair, I would ask my manager about that.

Yeah I've had a look and it's currently all marked as sold out near my office, but I'll keep checking now and then in case anything becomes available

Would have been helpful to put that information into your op. I would go speak to your manager/HR and ask them for a solution - or a pay supplement to cover the costs - but you will be taxed on that so you need to be paid more than the parking.

Elebag · 13/05/2024 10:08

£0. I changed jobs years ago so it's a 35 min walk. I couldn't fit in a commute around young dc's and I can keep fit this way.

No one pays to park in the business park, there's loads of spaces. It's virtually in a town centre.

theteddybear · 13/05/2024 16:23

City centre and it's £4.50 in an NCP car park for the day only because we get a massively discounted rate. It's usually £25 or £22 if u book it on the app! A massive difference and it's cheaper than the train and a lot more flexible and quicker. I'm absolutely loving it 😀 although I only go in once a week anyway.

That's a lot of money even the £9 per day. Doesn't sound like u have much options though. Could u maybe at least get a note of who's on holiday when so u can use their space on those days!

Although I'd be checking again with mgr if it's ok to expense it. If they say yes start claiming it!
