How much do you pay you commute/park each day for work?

I started a new job a few weeks ago and I'm really struggling with the parking situation.

Basically, our office has very limited parking and, as the newbie, I don't have a space.
Parking nearby is between £16-24 a day
There is a car park about a 15 minute walk away that's £9 a day

I can't do park and ride because I can't get there in time for the 8.30 bus, and the next one is 8.55 so I'd be late for work.

I'm really not sure what, if anything, I can do. I work 3 days a week, so looking at £108 a month if I use the cheaper car park.

Basically, what I want to know is, do you think that's reasonable? Should I ask if I can claim it back as expenses or is car parking generally considered just part of having a job?
Should I kill a member of the team so that I can take their free office space?

They pay me (I only go in once or twice a month) for my commuting time and per mile, and I expense my parking. A couple of the offices have car parks that we have permits for.

eurochick · 10/05/2024 22:43

I don't think what you are paying is out of the ordinary. We are on the edge of London and pay £18-something for the train and another £7-something if we park at the station. Mostly we park on an unrestricted street ten minutes walk from the station as £25 a day is a lot. There's two of us - I go in 1-2 days, he usually does 3 days - so it is a fair chunk of household income each week.

peopleonthebusgoupanddown · 10/05/2024 22:46

When I go to the office it costs £24 a day for the train, plus £5 for tube, plus £8 for parking.

And £50 a day for doggy daycare.

I go in as little as possible.

It isn't usually something you can claim in expenses, but check your contract and/or ask about the parking costs and if work can cover/contribute if you feel it might be.

Some workplaces/contracts do provide paid for parking, though not necessarily for all employees.

If someone is on holiday can you use their spot? Is that allowed to reduce some of the costs?

2 days a week into London from a commuter town. £30 a day train and £11 in the station car park a day. Painful.

Sendhelp101 · 11/05/2024 00:55

Very little. Can walk in 15 mins but I do the school run everyday so about £40 a month in petrol as I rarely drive anywhere else

SlothsNeverGetIll · 11/05/2024 05:00

I like to go in twice a week and the train costs £19 a day.

bluebellsInWinter · 11/05/2024 05:09

My train is £87 a day plus zone 1 ticket so about £94. Then add car parking at the station. Gets me to £101 each time I go to the office!

I try not to go frequently!

jobessieandme · 11/05/2024 06:40

I pay £60 a day for my train plus £5.60 on the tube. I do it twice a week, so £550 a month on average.

It stings but I get a London salary for that and live somewhere lovely in a house I couldn't afford in London!

SqueakyRadish · 11/05/2024 07:18

I'm now feeling pretty lucky after hearing some of the costs you all have!

I'm finding it hard as I've just returned to work after a very long period of being a SAHM, so it's all new to me.
I'm financially worse off, so this stings a bit.
But I really enjoy my job and it's good for my mental health so I'll make it work :-)

I park for free but it's 35km each way by car, plus a two £1 tolls if I leave work after 5pm unless I take the 44km route.

Tyjaro75 · 11/05/2024 08:13

Have you tried the just park app? Lots of private parking spaces you can book for less.
I work in Bristol and the closest multi storey cost £24 a day. I used to get a private space on just park for £3.50 a day.

ZenNudist · 11/05/2024 08:43

£4.50 tram fare twice a week. Sometimes more often Sometimes less often.

Uses to pay £1.20 parking as well but then they closed that car park and now I park in a residential street and walk 5mins to the tram.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/05/2024 09:19

If I was still doing my old commute into London it would cost me over £5,000 a year on the train, or over £6,000 if I included the tube (I didn't, and used to walk the 20 minutes each way from the station to work).

I had no car parking costs as I used to walk from home to the station.

So glad I have retired!

It's in Guildford

Is the office based in Guildford town centre? I work in Guildford and park nearby for free and walk into the centre. It is about a 15/20 minute walk. There are a few car parks that are cheaper but are around a 10-minute walk into Guildford.

Where do you park?

I'm near the law courts, so Bedford road is my closest, but I tend to use Farnham rd which is about 10-15 mins walk

Ah ok - not too far. I park in Guildford Spectrum Car Park, it used to be a park & ride service but this has been closed for quite some years. It is free to park and there is lots of space in the morning. The majority of people who park there work in the town centre so they cut across Stoke Park and come out on Stoke Road, shouldn't take any longer than 15/20 minutes. You can also park in Guildford College car park during school holidays, so that is slightly closer.

Blanketpolicy · 11/05/2024 21:24

I work hybrid, it is supposed to be 60% but so far getting away with less.

I pay around £360/quarter for 90hrs parking a month 10 mins walk from work. That gives me 10 working days a month which I don’t always use, but towards the end of the month if I haven’t used all my hours I let ds or colleagues use for free before the new month starts.

Works out about £12/day. Which is rubbish as previous location had free parking. We also no longer have subsided lunches so another £6 for a sandwich and drink. Makes it expensive to just go to work!

PotatoPudding · 11/05/2024 21:26

Have you checked to see if any of the car parks offer monthly permits? Our local council does. It’s £3 a day to park or £25 a month for a permit.

Companies cannot pay for your commute, as HMRC do not allow this kind of expense unless it’s a benefit in kind, which means you’d have to declare it to HMRC and pay tax on it like you would with a company car.

Have you tried a driveway / private spot renting site? I work in an NHS hospital and pay 19 a month but did jury service in central Durham last year and it was way cheaper to rent someone's driveway a 10 minute walk away.

I didn't qualify for a parking space when I was travelling 2 hours for a hospital training post, and nearest free parking was over 30mins walk. I ended up using Just park for a driveway 10mins away for about £12 per day. In the end I got chatting to the homeowner and we came to a monthly cash deal that suited us both.

GreggsSteakBake · 11/05/2024 21:41

I work for Transport for London so if the buses are being shit at most I pay to use the national rail train at £3.10 each way. I get all the transport under the TfL umbrella free.

EasilyDeterred · 11/05/2024 21:51

About £2 petrol and free parking on an industrial estate close to a town centre. I've never worked anywhere that didn't have free parking but never worked in a city centre either.

fiorentina · 11/05/2024 21:51

I pay £42 a day for train and tube. I walk to the station. I can’t expense travel to my main place of work.

jay55 · 11/05/2024 22:07

£8.50 is the cap for zone 1-2, usually I pay £6.40 though if I'm going straight to office and back.

louderthan · 11/05/2024 23:54

Train is £5 day return. Takes me half an hour door to desk.
