How much do you pay you commute/park each day for work?

I started a new job a few weeks ago and I'm really struggling with the parking situation.

Basically, our office has very limited parking and, as the newbie, I don't have a space.
Parking nearby is between £16-24 a day
There is a car park about a 15 minute walk away that's £9 a day

I can't do park and ride because I can't get there in time for the 8.30 bus, and the next one is 8.55 so I'd be late for work.

I'm really not sure what, if anything, I can do. I work 3 days a week, so looking at £108 a month if I use the cheaper car park.

Basically, what I want to know is, do you think that's reasonable? Should I ask if I can claim it back as expenses or is car parking generally considered just part of having a job?
Should I kill a member of the team so that I can take their free office space?

My commute is £90 a day. Luckily I only go in once a week!

Oh wow!!! That's crazy

Parking close to my old work was £9.50 a day. I joined the local pyre gym (5 minute walk away) for £19 a month and left my car there every day 😀 some days I wouldn't actually use the gym, I'd just go in to put my reg in the machine and then walk back out x

I don’t know anyone who gets free parking at their workplace. Everyone has to pay. There’s no parking on residential streets where I work.

I do! But I work at a big industrial site in the middle of nowhere, company owns it all. They could make a fortune charging the captive audience for parking but I guess they don't.

Sorry OP, parking is generally considered the employee's problem. But it was sly of them to lie about the availability of parking.

It's unfair to assign based on seniority, you lot should just take turns...

WeAreAllMadeOfStarz · 10/05/2024 21:10

£25 in petrol + 3.40 parking a day.

LeedsZebra90 · 10/05/2024 21:15

I worked in a city centre previously where costs were ridiculous to park, i used the sat nav to just drive round in a mile radius of the office and found a random side street with no charges so might be worth doing something similar.

whoneedssixteen · 10/05/2024 21:17

£18 in total - per day.

VeraForever · 10/05/2024 21:42

Where is your office based! If it's in a city then your salary should reflect that with weighting, though it'll depend on which city.

Otherwise , I think you'll have to suck it up.

Even if I went in every day then it's cheaper to live where I do. I can have a five bed house rather than a bedsit in the city.

Interesting... I need to look into this 😂

It's in Guildford

Sorry , I can’t upload but Google London weighting and you’ll find that Guildford is included at , I think, 5%.

I did think about this actually. I fear I'm too unfit and would arrive a sweaty and useless mess. But maybe I could work at improving my fitness and give it a go

Loads of people do this here. The park and ride also has bike lockers to store full size bikes overnight.

mrssmith79 · 10/05/2024 22:00

Have you tried a driveway / private spot renting site? I work in an NHS hospital and pay 19 a month but did jury service in central Durham last year and it was way cheaper to rent someone's driveway a 10 minute walk away.

AlltheFs · 10/05/2024 22:03

£20 a month for the work car park (unlimited days), or you can pay as you go at £4 a day. There’s no guarantee of a space but since hybrid working it’s been ok.

There’s public car parks for in the region of £8-12 a day. Or park and ride options.

My car is electric and I have a 1hr drive in from a rural area. My driving costs are only about £2-3 in home charging.

Iseethesilverlining · 10/05/2024 22:04

£11.20 station car park and £84.20 return train, 3 days a week. Into central London.

Xiaoxiong · 10/05/2024 22:04

I park at the station, £6 for the day if I park before 9am and then train ticket into London on top. If I drove into London the closest car park to my office is £38/hour.

Secondaryappealhelp · 10/05/2024 22:04

I pay just under £20 a day for the train (45 mins plus 45 min walk) because its preferable to the £24 parking and 1 hour stressful drive. I could also do park and ride but it just feels like a crap option with both the stressful drive of same length plus then public transport and walk. Our office is in a city centre and has very limited parking that we are not allowed to use

sanogo · 10/05/2024 22:18

I live very close to a large hospital. Employees have been known to park in streets without parking restrictions and then get a foldable bike out of the car and cycle in

paristotokyo · 10/05/2024 22:21

Our closest car park is £15 per day but there is free parking a 20 min walk away however some people have had their cars damaged or shouted so I avoided it. Also was heavily pregnant so couldn't manage the walk anyway. Have you tried the JustPark app? I used that daily and for my area the average cost was £7 for a day and sometimes i got a driveway super close to work so I'd try and prebook those.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/05/2024 22:25

Both Dh and I have free parking at work - zero chance of us even contemplating taking jobs which required us to pay for parking! I only have a short drive but Dh does have a 40mile commute each way - so petrol costs are less than £40 per month, but his diesel is easily that per week.

NewName24 · 10/05/2024 22:25

Unfortunately not, only because if I don't leave in time at the end of the day I'm late to pick DS up from childcare.

Otherwise I think that would be a viable solution.

What about if your partner collects your ds? Or drops ds and you pick up ? What are you trying to do both ?

LadyLapsang · 10/05/2024 22:27

I live and work in London but because I am in my 60s I only need to pay to travel to work as the journey home is free 💕London Oyster 60+

Noname1000 · 10/05/2024 22:28

I catch the bus to work. A 5 day ticket is £16,90 a week.

I'm a single mum. His dad is not involved

Nothing, free and ample parking at work and I drive. Well, I put petrol in my car so I suppose there’s that cost.
