Is it weird if coworkers see you naked?

And before you come at me... I mean at the gym.

My company got a very good membership deal with a gym across the road from the office. I am 2 years pp and I am starting to want to lose the baby weight (I can't use the "I just had a baby" excuse any more!!).

So we got a week trial before signing up and I planned to go on my lunch break, run for a bit and do some strenght training, stretching etc. I only get 1 hour lunch so I want to fit in about 40 mins exercise and some time to get changed and return. I can then eat lunch at my desk while I work.

Here is my issue... If many of my coworkers sign up to go to the gym, I will have to get changed while some of them are there at the same time. I have only been at this job for 2 months so it's not like we are buddies. I am still quite reserved at the office. I don't have issues with my body, but I cringe a bit on the idea that people I see every day would have seen me naked. I do need to change all my clothes down to my underwear. I could change at the provate cubicles, but I usually juct change in front of my locker to save time.

So what does everyone think??

Surprised how many people have such issues with this, we’re all largely the same and everyone is just getting changed to work out not gawping at one another. Use a cubicle if free but I’d try to just get over yourself. Also if a colleague is there could be a chance for chit chat and to get to know one another

PauliesWalnuts · 14/03/2024 20:10

Me and a fair few colleagues cycle to work and we don’t have private cubicles. We just turn to face the wall and get into underwear as quickly as we can and then take our time for the rest of our clothes, hair etc. There’s never any drama.

Cvn · 14/03/2024 20:21

Several of my colleagues have seen me completely naked, legs akimbo. Doesn't phase me (or them) in the slightest.
But I'm a midwife with a couple of kids!

We have a gym in my office building, and everyone who works in the building works for the company. i thought this when i first joined as i find it a little weird too, but it's because i am a cubicle kind of girlie anyway!

Change under a towel. Towel round your middle then bra and top on. Move towel down and change bottom half. Both boobs and arse will always be covered.

BillieEyelash1 · 14/03/2024 20:45

I don’t see the issue. If you’re worried about it just use the cubicles. I used to go to the (public) gym next to my school and would regularly see teachers there so just used the cubicles (or just kept my PE kit on). At my old job we had to wear uniform and all changed in female only spaces with no separate cubicles (unless you changed in the toilets), nobody cared even though we all worked together.

How do you know that was the reason, though? They might have medical things that they don’t want to reveal - a mastectomy, a stoma bag, a catheter?

nope - she had nothing of the sort, she was a very very prudish American who couldn't cope with seeing naked people and certainly wouldn't even undress to her underwear in front of other women. She told us that.
She soon stopped going because it really made her stand out, and other women started to complain that because there were only 2 toilet cubicles in the changing area, she was causing a queue.

Nobody had an issue with it as such - except for waiting for the loo. She only went for about 2 months then stopped.

As above- how much time are you saving by not going to a cubicle? I always use them- even when there is no one I know!

German gyms don't tend to have cubicles, IME. It's just not a thing. People get showered, slather themselves with body lotion, dry their hair, in varying states of dress from bollock naked to nearly dressed. Old and wringly, fat, thin, scars, no scars, tattoos, any combination of that. It just doesn't seem to be A Thing to be coy or shy here.

We have mixed naked saunas too (I don't use them, but lots do)

PonyPatter44 · 14/03/2024 20:57

We have a gym at work, and there are only communal changing rooms, no cubicles at all. It's initially a bit weird seeing the big bosses starkers...but you get used to it.

LlynTegid · 14/03/2024 20:58

I would think it weird myself. Fortunately not likely to happen in my case given where I live and others do.

NoFunNoFrills · 14/03/2024 21:08

I remember being in my early 20s, walking into the changing room at my work's gym, and there was a fully naked woman wearing nothing but stockings and high heels. Walking round like it was nothing. I was so shocked (I'm pretty shy/conservative) and didn't know where to look.

There were private changing rooms.

Still scarred me 15+ years later. No i don't want to see naked people at work, or anywhere. Change in the shower if you must, at least underwear FFS.

RoachFish · 14/03/2024 21:45

It’s quite concerning that so many people on here are scarred or traumatised from seeing naked female bodies. It’s quite horrible that our bodies are viewed that way. We shouldn’t have to hide away, especially not around other women.

SirChenjins · 14/03/2024 21:52

I don’t think there are many on here who are traumatised or scarred, are there?

I don’t particularly want to see others naked bodies but that’s just my preference. What they do in Germany is irrelevant here.

PlumbersWifey · 14/03/2024 21:55

Definitely do not get naked infront of colleagues

RoachFish · 14/03/2024 22:01

@SirChenjins the poster above me says she has been scarred for 15 years, someone on a previous post is still badly affected by seeing her colleagues big boobs.

It is of course completely relevant what people do in other countries if they have a healthier view of nudity/modesty/being open etc. It’s good to have other perspectives than your own and whether that’s cultural or individual matters less.

Ineedamanicure · 14/03/2024 22:12

Use the cubicles.

I have never understood women who saunter around the changing rooms naked, stand drying their hair etc.

They’re the ones who make such a big deal about being so cool with nakedness and not minding who sees them naked and it doesn’t seem to occur to them that maybe people mind seeing them naked?

I do not want to see randoms strangers naked and I definitely do not want to see my colleagues, ever!!

That’s not “so many” though, is it?

I disagree - I think it’s healthier to respect all viewpoints, whether it’s down to cultural, religious, personal preferences or whatever.

NoFunNoFrills · 14/03/2024 23:26

@RoachFish In my defence as a "scarred" person: if someone sent me an unsolicited naked picture, I would be in my rights to complain. Similarly, if someone flashed me,I could report them. Seeing a naked person in the flesh is 100% worse.

I was kind of joking with the "scarred" comment, but it must have had an effect as I still remember it and still think it was very, very odd. She wasn't just changing in a corner, she was parading round. Bonkers! I know this isn't the norm, but my preference is not to see naked people.

DirtyKit · 15/03/2024 07:37

mumlosingcontrol · 14/03/2024 17:10

why?

Because if you exercise you will smell. If not to you then to those around you. It’s not ok!

Scarred is a strong word to talk about seeing a naked body tbh.

I mean, if you’ve ever been to a swimming pool, you are likely to have seen people naked/getting changed. Plus, ofc, all the nudity images present everywhere on screen etc….. It’s not that unusual, even if you are ‘Conservative’

The poster explained their use of scarred. I’d feel uncomfortable too if I saw a woman walking about the changing room in high heels and stockings too - I mean, come on. Just get dressed fgs.

StarlightLime · 15/03/2024 13:09

Who puts on their stockings and high heels before their knickers? 🤔

Because the people with “problematic” bodies aren’t likely to get changed communally. You don’t see them.

Oh so I should go and hide with my problematic body then….

Nice….

CaterhamReconstituted · 15/03/2024 20:06

I think it’s weird. But then I get freaked out if I’m naked in front of the dog.
