How long did it take you to transition from full-time employment to self-employment/business ownership?

Hi all,

For context, I’m in full-time employment, and I launched a business last October. I’ve increasingly realised that I’m never going to be particularly happy in any workplace, and that I’m a far more entrepreneurially minded, “think outside the box” type. The business is doing fairly well all things considered and is making quite a few sales, but no where near the point where it would sustain me.

The main thing I’m struggling with is not having sufficient time to spend on it, because I’m developing all the products myself.

For the business owners out there, how long did it take you to go full-time on your business? Did anyone go part-time beforehand?

I lost my job after mat leave so it was easy!

can you go down to 4 days/week? Then you can scale up…
good luck!

Is there a conflict of interest between your current employment and what you would be doing as a self-employed person? If there is any kind of cross-over, then it would probably be quite difficult to reduce your hours at one while building up the other.

Would you be able to afford to go cold turkey and lose your salary entirely whilst building up the business, or do you need the income security?
