I started working every Friday and am not taxed as do not earn enough but also do not get charged National Insurance. I questioned if this was correct and the payroll dept said yes I do not have to pay this.

Is this correct?

You are probably below the lower earnings threshold but I'm not sure what that threshold is. I'll check it for you.

You may want to pay some voluntarily to safeguard your pension - although if you get child benefit that's taken care of I think?

I know they wrote to me last year asking if I'd like to top-up.

I work 14 hours a week and earn under the threshold for NI. As the recipient of the Child Benefit I am covered though. If I work extra hours and get more pay I sometimes pay about £3.00

The lower earnings threshold for 2007-2008 is £87 rising to £90 for 2008-2009. If you earn below that you won't pay the contributions. As Nobunny said though you migt want to pay some contributions depending on your situation. Ig you go onto the HMRC website there's lots of information on this.
