Applying for internal job - what if I don’t get the job? Would that be awkward with current manager?

I am currently on mat leave and would like to apply for an internal role that has just come out. I will need to inform my line manager that I’ll be applying - which is fine. However, what happens if I don’t get the role? Do you reckon it would be awkward with my current line manager?

I feel she’s been really accommodating with me going away on mat leave for a year and agreeing to work a 4-day week when I return that I kind of feel bad for applying for a new role but equally, why should mat leave hold me back?

thank you

Why would it be awkward.
You're in the workplace to better yourself and seek promotion, as is your manager.

Depends on the workplace and her personality. Some people do take these things personally. Most don't, though - especially in a big organisation.

I agree you shouldn't let mat leave hold you back.

Are you planning on discussing it with her before you apply? You say you're on mat leave... But, if you can spare a few minutes for a phone call (rather than just informing her after the event) that might smooth things over, even if she isn't delighted.
