Is it true that you can tag 6 months unpaid leave onto ML?

Someone told me that you are entitled to an additional 6 months unpaid leave on top of your 1 year. Is this true?

You get 6 months unpaid ontop of 6 months paid

I think they may mean parental leave, which is available to all parents of children under the age of six, and you can, if agreeable to your employer take it after your ML. I thought it was only 13 weeks though.

Bear in mind that this is until they are six so you might want to save ot for all those unexpected illnesses when you can't get a sitter.

It depends what you mean. You can get 9 months SMP now and any 'paid' leave on top of that is your employers discretion. But you can take up to a year away from work.

There is also a statutory parental leave scheme where either parent can ask for unpaid parental leave up until your child is 5 I think but this has to be negotiated.

I think you need an HR person for clearer advice!
