I need a job that will pay 40K - what can I do and where can I look?

Hi,

Am a regular who's namechanged because I'm a bit embarrassed by this. My husbands job is not going well, in fact the company is not doing great either and he isn't earning what we need to survive at all.

He has been looking at other jobs but the whole industry which is quite niche is looking decidedly dodgy.

Therefore, we have thought about me going out to work and him staying home with our 4 young children. I have tried and tried to look for a well paid evening/ weekend job but nothing has come up that looks worthwhile tbh.

I have a good skill set and a good degree - any suggestions for well piad graduate schemes or anything at all that I could apply for? Would need to be midlands based.

you need to get registered with some high end recruitment companies, and as KM says what skills set do you have??

I wouldn't think a graduate scheme is going to pay that much.

I'd say to earn that much you need experience, seniority and a proven track record at whatever you do, not just good skills and a degree.

Do you have that? Can you say any more about what you do? Or at least the sector you will be looking at?

Not being flippant, just that that isn't an entry level salary, I'm afraid.

senior roles in retail can have a good basic as well as commission

I can't see any entry-level job paying that much, sorry, esp not outside london. Jobs that pay that much tend to require a fair amount of experience in the field you are in, which I take it you haven't got, else you wouldn't be asking.

I graduated nearly 20 years ago, been in my profession 19 years. I still don't even earn £25,000 yet. Let me know when you find your perfect role!!

most graduate schemes are just that - they recruit straight out of uni

IIRC, LIDL or ALDI, often advertise for regional maangers on £40 k + a car

needtoearn you are, age discrimination legislation means these can't be restricted now, and lots of companies don't call them grad schemes any more for that reason.

But you will be very very lucky to find one taking people on at that level on £40k. They just don't need to.

That is a tall order. My dh has only just broken the 40k barrier after nearly 20 yrs industry experience (engineering). In my field (HE academic) that is also a level for people with 10+ years experience.

Do you have specific training/experience in a particular sector or industry?

I don't know what to suggest really, scan the jobs pages for what sectors are well paid that you might be able to move up in quickly. Basic choices are a technical skill in demand (IT related) or management I guess.

I have experience of research, writing articles, and working with vulnerable adults.

I don't mind working all hours to achieve this salary.

I think when it comes to a choice between a bushy-tailed graduate who can be set to work long hours and moulded to the corporate culture, and a returner to the workplace, recruiters on graduate schemes are going to go for the youngster every time.
It may be their loss but that's what those schemes exist for.
