PRINCE II Project management training

Anyone done this? My mum rung to say someone had said its a great qualification to have. I am thinking of a career change so am looking at all options. Do you have to be working in this field to benefit from this qualification?

I used to work in the direct mailing industry and had colleges that did this-
most of us didn't have it as a formal qualification. Not a major leg up IMO- just a recognised way of showing common sense logical planning as far as I can tell.
Interested to know if someone else has more experience of this, maybe in other fields.

Blimey!- seems a tad expensive, and no guarentee that you will be given any projects to manage directly when back in role to practise the methods on, cos that's up to those who manage you.

DP did this recently but his new job does involve a fair bit of preoject management.

DH did this (and he works in project management in the public sector, so no argument with hanaflower there!). It was really hard work, lots of rote learning of systems and acronyms, followed by an exam. I think the course was more like £1500. It is essential in the field he works in, at the level he works at, but only because it has been decreed to be so, not because they actually use the methods...

A bit like hygene then in that sometimes its not enough to do it, rather you need to been seen to do it ?

execceltn qual if you want to do project management most big orgs use it or use there own processes derived from it.

It's very useful indeed - all our project management is based on PRINCE2 or MicroPRINCE. It isn't just the qualification: learning how to manage projects is an essential skill in itself.

Hmmm thank you. Very interesting. It doesnt sound as though its worth me doing with a view to then finding a job in project management. Sounds like I would need to get some experience first followed by the course with a view to improving my prospects. I dont actually work in project management at the moment. I work in a specialised scientific field which require me to manage large loads of work so there would be some transferable skills. I am just considering all my options at the moment. DH works in IT banking management and suggested project management to me. I think I need to delve further. Thansk again for all your help.

I'm not a project manager but most of my job has turned out to be managing projects IYSWIM. Maybe try an introduction to project management course first?

hello, just wanted to say my dh did this a few jobs ago and has moved onwards and upwards ever since - it is aways noticed on his CV and he's certainly put it to good use.

I am PMP Certification (Project Management Professional) through the PMI (Project Management Institute). The only snag to this qualification is that you cannot sit the course/exam without a certain amount of proven experience in the field.

I agree with another poster who said that a better starting point is a generic Project Management Course to introduce the concepts and best practice methodologies of Project Management. Once experience is gained in this field, then you can go onto certifying in particular methodologies to bulk out your CV.

I have been working as a Project Manager for 8 years now and only recently completed by PMP (2 years ago).

DH works in IT so I had only thought about project managing in that sense. Those of you who work in project management in some way or another, what areas do you work in? I have almost 10 years experience in my field so would like to look for something where that can be of use. My background is scientific so no experience in IT.

I have done it. And I was, and still am working in accounts, so......
But I did find alot of the stuff very interesting.

I am a PM, have been for years, and have succesfully managed to avoid this course
From what my colleagues have told me it is very theory based, and doesn't beat hands on experience.

Hasn't caused me a problem to date, nor would I refuse to hire someone because they didn't have it

(work for large bank btw)
