Do I need to tell my manager if I want to apply for another role in another department?

I work for a very big organisation. People seem to move around a lot, but I don't know the etiquette. I know you have to apply for roles as if you are an external candidate though.

Do I need to tell my line manager if I want to apply for a role in another department? If so, is it not very awkward if you don't get the job?! Surely they are then waiting for you to find something and leave?

Depends on your relationship I think. I went for a job in another department (different business unit), and didn’t say anything until I got the job.

in my company you need support of your current line manager to apply for another job

I work in the civil service so not sure if it's the same in the private sector, but we're usually open about going for other positions within the organisation where I am. It's usually well-supported and even encouraged. I think if you have a supportive manager then being open about it is fine and often appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. Is it awkward with your manager if you don't get the job?
