Hi everyone not long ago I was discussing career options with some of you. Well having visited a primary school last week I think I am going to train to be a primary teacher. One problem though. I am British but originally from Bulgaria and have finished my secondary education there in a Linguistic school. We don't officially have GCSEs, we only have Diploma from Secondary Education which is equivalent to your Alevels here. I have good grades but was not good in maths and have a D in Maths. I want to know what can I do about it now. I am good at basic maths but was bad in secondary school. I didn't think that it would matter because primary Maths is easy. What should I do?

You need a C in maths.

There are access courses/gcse options.

And btw primary maths is not as easy as you might think. Because you are dealing with some major concepts the better your understanding the more effective your teaching will be.

Access courses tend to be a year long.

teacher training website

some info on requirements

I would think a one year access course, followed by B Ed or degree + pgce sounds feasible.

You could do maths gcse, possibly quicker??? but not sure how you go about that - perhaps look into your local college or evening classes?

do you think that if i wasn't good at maths i shouldn't really teach primary ?

No I wouldn't let that stop you.

You can gain more confidence in Maths and I'm sure you have many other areas of strength that your class would benefit from.

I personally am a bit shit at music. And have to work hard at geography.
