dropping grades when returning after mat leave

i'm in process of negotiating part time position for my return to work. have been told that i can't do my present job part time which i agree with so they are tryng to find another role for me but i have been told it will mean dropping grades. am i not entitled to stay on the same salary? getting more details tomorrow and will speak to my union rep but if anyone has any experience would be grateful to hear it. thanks x

You are only guaranteed the same job or equivalent if you return in a set period to your old job.

If you wish to go part time and it involves a new position, then the terms and salary can change.

At least your lucky that they are trying to find you a new part time job to suit your needs.

If you return after ordinary maternity leave you are entitled to the same job. If you return after additional maternity leave you are entitled to the same terms and conditions in a suitable job.

But if you request flexible working, it is (justifiably) refused, they don't have to find you another job at all. At the moment you have a choice, return to your old job on the same terms and conditions, same hours, or they are being good enough to try and find you something on the hours you want which will enable you to stay there. They could easily just say take it or leave it with your original job, assuming (as you say) that they are justified refusing your part time request.

thanks for your replies! it's pretty much as i thought and you're right that at leat they are trying to find something for me! will have to see what they offer then work out if financially viable. thanks again x
