what kind of people can i put down for references?

just filling in online job application for m+s. i need two references. obviously i havent been in paid employment for quite a while and no volunteer work either.

can i put down someone i know?

yes you can. Normal is at least one employement related plus someone who has known you reasonably long term. How long is quite a while , I went back to employer almost 10 years on!

I think you should put down one reference from last paid employment - even if that was a long time ago - and a personal reference too would be fine, someone you have known for several years would be good

over 6yrs ago i worked.

actually my old place of work doesnt even exsist. it was Safeway. now its a morrisons store.

Just put down the HR manager of Morrisons (then Safeway). They probably won't even check their records fully, just write an "I confirm x was an employee from such and such a date until blah blah !"

Hi misdee,

Morrisons/Safeway will be able to confirm that you were employed by them but that will be it. But your new employer should understand that.
2nd reference can be a personal one - I've used parent's friend in the past as close but not too close to suggest bias.
