Want to hand my notice in, school job (non teaching)

I am autistic and work as a dinner lady in a local authority primary. I have been there since the start of the current term and am really not coping with the position and want to resign. We don't need me to work so my dh is fine with me leaving.

My mental health is really struggling. I thought I'd be able to cope till the end of term, which is Friday but today I've not stopped crying and have had suicidal thoughts for the first time in years. I would never do anything to myself, I think it's just the stress of it all.

Can I self certify sick for the next two days?
Can I hand in my notice in the school holidays if I'm pro rata and have to give a month? Would I get paid for August or owe any money to the school?
Pay day is the last working day of each month.

Hi, sorry to hear this OP, I also work in a school kitchen but we finished today.

Do you work for the school or a catering company? Definitely take the time you need for your mental health.

I would call in sick for tomorrow and Friday you can state mental health or any reason you'd like. Then on Monday say you've been thinking over the weekend and the jobs not a good fit for you right now (or whatever you want to say) and that you are putting in your two weeks notice.

Technically if you put your notice in tomorrow then you aren't working your two weeks notice. But you would be on Monday as it's your equated pay.

Unless your employers are malicious I doubt they'd make a fuss either way.

Plenty of staff put notice in over the summer, not much we can do about it.

Hope you feel better soon

Thank you
I work for the school itself.
I honestly feel like such a failure. I KNEW there was a risk I wouldn't be able to cope with the noise but the head persuaded me to apply as she thought it might be good for me.
I really need to do something quiet and less erratic. I love the kids but when they all want something at the same time, it's really stressful.

Yes, I get sensory overload from the kids where I work! Very noisy and chaotic.

Depends on your contract

Most employees are for the whole school year so you can hand you notice in one month prior to the September start date and not go back.

Yes self certify for now.

Make sure you have the heads email address they work over the holidays.

I'll have a look on the contract.
If I'm contracted for the whole school year, will I get a payment still in August? I'm not bothered if not, I'm just curious.

I've literally had 3 hours sleep and my anxiety is sky high.
I hope they aren't going to be awkward about it all, I'm really not up for a deep conversation at the moment.
