handing in notice

I haven't got the job yet but if I do I want to give my four weeks notice, this takes me up until the week before end of term. I would like to not work up to the end of term and start new job after Easter holiday. Does anyone know if I can do this or will it affect my pension and be a break in service. Just speculating at the moment but wanted to know if this was a possibility. Any advise gratefully received.

What is your occupation? You will need to speak to your pension provider and check on break in service but I would be suprised if 1 week made a difference. If you only have to give 4 weeks' notice and that is in your contract then that is all you have to give however I would check on the break in service/pension with the provider. Good luck with the job offer.

If you are in the NHS then I think you should try to avoid a break in service. A friend of my changed jobs then discovered she was pregnant and they tried to deny her her full maternity leave and payment because there were a few days between leaving the old job and starting the new one. Fortunately she could prove that the missing days were actually annual leave, so technically she was working in her old job (but on holiday) right up until she started her new one. I don't think missing a few days will have much effect on your pension though.

Do you have any annual leave to take? Perhaps you could book the week before Easter as holiday and then you won't have to hand your notice in just yet.

I work in a school and so have no annual leave but will check with my pension provider, thanks for the advise. Bran hopefully the maternity thing won't apply as I have no intention of having any more children
