NHS June payslip

Hello everyone, Could anyone that has already had their payslip for June tell me if the amount of tax on our pay with the lump sum this month is as bad as social media is saying? I was looking forward to payday this month, now I’m a little worried.

@CakeWarrior as rubbish as it, unfortunately there has to be a cut off point. NHS England and the unions are the ones who decided the cut off for anyone receiving it had to be employed by the 31st March 2023 therefore your trust won't be able to do anything with regards to your complaint.

I work in NHS payroll and we've processed this with very little warning, worked insane amounts of overtime to ensure the 20,000 people in our trust have received it so please everyone think twice before ringing and shouting at them on payday. As with all pay rises in any sectors, there are thresholds that you will be tipped into once you reach a certain salary. This includes student loan as you have it deducted at a standard percentage on any earnings over the thresholds. For anyone on a cumulative tax code you will find your tax will be reduced/a a refund received in a few months once they know it isn't your normal earnings. The two one off payments were not pensionable.

Anyone know what to do if there's no bonus on my payslip? Don't get paid til 27th but payslip available on ERS. I'm a midwife full time NHS

Do you GP surgery staff qualify for it - they usually miss out on extras like this due to their employment status?

I wouldn't have thought so, they're not employed by the NHS.

I am NHS and have my payslip with back pay and additional lump sum this month.

I am not a Tory.

I do find it interesting that people are moaning about deductions.

Some people, the higher earners, are entirely used to 40% and 45% deductions.

... and those deductions pay our salaries!

@batmansbike I fully get there has to be a cut off point - however as this is backdated in line with the scottish and wales bonuses we never got it is ridiculously unfair as i and many others worked our guts out and put ourselfes in harms way and its a slap in the face. People who have recently retired or had to leave for other reasons. I cant fathom why it cant be worked on if you worked during that particular period. Its utter bollocks. Im on my knees and that money would have been an utter godsend

Top band 6-37.5 hours got 1900 ish.

I got mine today. I'm PT (21 hours p/w, top of Band 3) - my usual pay is circa £1100 a month. This month, with the back payment, my net pay was £1746. My NHS Backlog payment was £700 and 2022 non-con payment was £260. I subsequently received £2246.19 and total deductions were £500.

I don't claim any benefits as DH is the full-time earner and my job supplements our income.

It's always a bit depressing when they show you the amounts of the bonus "here's what you could have won" and you know it's not really what you take home but that's the system!

That's the same for any job, not just the NHS.

My bonus has just taken me into the higher tax bracket. I don't earn enough for the extra to be worth much after tax (bonus is a percentage of salary, not a fixed amount).

I'd be better off if my annual salary was a bit lower so I could keep more of my bonus - but in the words of the great Boris "them's the breaks"

You’ll get the extra tax repaid either in your next payslip or at the end of the tax year. It’s not great having to wait but you will get it back.

Sadly the same doesn’t apply to NI!

I don't even understand my payslip this month. I'm on mat leave and this is my last month of OMP being paid (I spread the payments) and for some reason my OMP is almost double alongside the bonus payments so I'm half expecting contact to request money back.

It doesn't get pension taken off it so it's just tax and NI. It is pretty hefty deduction but overall deductions for me this month (including student loan who also took a handful of the bonus) was around 30% and usually it's about 33-34%

I can't see anybody replied to this with an answer, but if you get a pay rise during mat leave, it has to be backdated to when they calculated your 90% / average pay for SMP. I got back pay for the same reason during mine only because I pointed the law out to my employer!.

Your Trust may apply it for all of your mat pay if it's worked on based on the qualifying weeks too. I'm not NHS so don't know.

@batmansbike Do you know if someone who worked for the NHS in the 22-23 tax year but left before March 2023 will be eligible to receive anything? Either the extra pay or the one off payment? (Pro-rata for the length of time they were working of course.)

I think the gov.uk explanation stated you needed to be in post on 31/03/23 to be eligible for the bonus. And it would be based on your to&come as of that day (for example band, hours)

@icanseethesuncanyou the cut off point is that you have to be employed in an active substantive role as of the 31st March 2023. Your payment would be a pro-rata payment based on what ever house you worked on this date.

I got around £1200 extra in the end which I'm happy about, most of it will go into savings to get me through the year though.

Single parent on a band 6 wage and I struggle every single month to make ends meet.

@CakeWarrior it's ridiculous isn't it, supposed to be back pay or covid bonus🙄three NHS workers in my house and only one gets it despite both my adult children working on covid wards and between us we've had covid 5 times in the house ( I'm not entitled as semi retired and on zero hours contracts although I've worked there for nearly 20 years and one of my kids had enough after 10 years and left in February so not in post on the magic date, but if it had been a normal rise they would have still received the backpay to which they are entitled)😡

@NoWordForFluffy thank you no one had replied that I saw. I tried to get in touch with payroll today just to check as I don't want to pay some things off to find out I owe money but there were too many people calling so I'll try in a few days. I imagine it's been a shitty shift for those in payroll today answering the calls and getting back to people!

We were prepared for the worst today but actually calls weren't that bad. A lot of people will hit 40% bracket this month as we are only at month 3 allowances wise. However month by month your tax will be adjusted if you won't hit 40% for the year so you should get some tax back ultimately (make sure you are on a cumulative code).

A PP mentioned this was for substantive posts. I'm on a year's contract and received an extra £1,800 (32 hours, bottom of band 7). Should I not have received this as I'm on a short term contract?

i don’t understand the tax comments, the more you earn the more tax you pay. For most of it wouldn’t take us into the next tax bracket so although it looks like they’ve taken a lot the % would still be the same?

I just figured out why I'm not eligible. Started a new job this year. I was supposed to start said job on 2nd March but because of DBS delays I started on 2nd May so I was not ‘employed’ during that time. So I have missed out on the bonus because you had to be employed on 31st March to be eligible
I'm so disappointed 15 years straight of being employed by the NHS and an external company's delays mean I've missed out. I'm devastated

@WAC1 was your NHS employment continuous? If so it is worth pointing out that you were employed by NHS on 31 March 2023.

@Tippingadvice my contract for the previous trust ended in 2/3/23 (end of mat leave) and didn't start at new trust until 2/5/23 due to DBS delays (my dbs took 101 days). I got the new job 17/1/23 but no contract until 2/5/23.
So that means I haven't been continuously employed doesn't it? 😞 I feel so disappointed and frustrated with the DBS service
