Would you have said “Goodbye” to unfriendly coworkers when leaving?

Kinda playing on my mind this. I left yesterday after being in the job about 6 months. Didn’t say a think to coworkers, in fact they didn’t even know I was leaving, it was mainly because of them I was leaving, the most unfriendly bunch I have ever come across, not even as much as a Good Morning never mind a chat. I made the effort for the first few weeks but it was met with one word answers, like trying to draw blood from a stone so I gave up my efforts, it was norm to go an entire day without speaking a word to anyone.

So got a new job, handed in my notice and left yesterday, coworkers none the wiser, my boss spoke as I walked out yesterday evening wishing me the best and said I can come back anytime. I made the decision not to tell coworkers as they probably wouldn’t give a shit anyway but I’ve been thinking maybe this looked rude now? But then they’ve been rude my entire 6 months.

What would you have done?

Same as you

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 21/06/2023 07:15

If they've been that unpleasant then I'd probably have not mentioned it either.

Did any of them hear your boss wish you well? Did they look surprised?

PuppyMonkey · 21/06/2023 07:16

Don’t even give them a second thought. I’d be curious to know whether they actually have a conversation about you and where you are - or will they all just sit there in stony silence not speaking of it. Grin

Twiglets1 · 21/06/2023 07:17

No I wouldn't - screw them.

cakewitch · 21/06/2023 07:19

Absolutely. You did the right thing. I've done the same.

determinedtomakethiswork · 21/06/2023 07:21

The thing is they probably knew. I'm sure somebody had told them. I think you did the right thing

ThursdayLastWeek · 21/06/2023 07:24

I would love to have played it as cool as that. That sounds brilliant. Fuck ‘em

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 07:24

Same as you tbh.

I worked at a hugely toxic place that sounds similar. When I started i overheard the receptionist saying; 'Well I won't bother talking to her, she's not going to last'. I lasted 5 years.

Thankfully I left during lockdown. Grin So no goodbyes, no contrived farewell drinks. I just turned my computer off and went and watered the garden.

Perfect.

RunyoucleverDoctor · 21/06/2023 07:25

I did the same as you. Worked in a place for 2 years. Didn't tell anyone it was my last day. Just left. No regrets about it either.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 21/06/2023 07:26

You did nothing wrong.

They probably saw what was going on but didn’t work it out, they’ll put two and two together this morning when I’m not in lol. That was actually first time the boss spoke to me since the interview, rather pleasant he was , perhaps if he hadn’t off been so sour the entire time I was there I might have stayed, I suspect that’s where the sourness in there came from him.

Well done. How rude they were.

Willmafrockfit · 21/06/2023 07:28

i cant imagine working somewhere so unfriendly for 6 months.
but you did the right thing.

MissingMoominMamma · 21/06/2023 07:30

How weird! Did they speak to one another?

VariantHela · 21/06/2023 07:32

Fuck em

TrexTeeth · 21/06/2023 07:33

Why do you care ? They're rude.

No, they all also sat in their cars at lunch time so they wouldn’t have had to make small talk with each other, so it just wasn’t with me. The only time they talked would have been something to do with work.

Yeah I know but I generally try to be a nice person and to me this seems kinda rude now looking back at it

Nope, I wouldn't have either.

justmyluck1234 · 21/06/2023 07:39

I would have done the exact same as you! Good luck in your new job, I hope the coworkers there are more friendly.

ChrisPriss · 21/06/2023 07:39

Forget about them - I wish you a happy time in your new job!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 21/06/2023 07:43

I don't think it was personal to you if they also don't talk to each other. It sounds like a dreadful place to work and you're best off out of it!

LT2 · 21/06/2023 07:48

I'm shocked that they wouldn't know. Anything little bit of 'gossip' gets passed round our place. As soon as you hand your notice in, the whole departments knows about it within days.🙄

Usou · 21/06/2023 07:54

Good for you!

Would you be prepared to make known the name of the place so others can avoid?

Or at least put a review on Glassdoor. Nothing worse than accepting a job in a toxic place and having to spend the next 2 years trying to escape without looking unreliable to other employers.

ScattyHattie · 21/06/2023 07:58

Think you did well not to shimmy past them shouting 'So long ya miserable fuckers!' on your way out. 🖕

What a weird place, guess they will need to request the next applicants antisocial and hate making small talk to fit in.
